Relay for Life adds new Halton event in 2014 continued from p.1 Teams of 10-15 people fundraise, individually and as a team, and gather at a local track, stadium or sports field to take turns walking laps all night in support of the CCS. Halton is hosting four events: · Relay for Life Halton on May 30, 7 p.m.-midnight, at Appleby College, 540 Lakeshore Rd. W. · Relay for Life Burlington on June 6, 7 p.m.-7 a.m., at Bronte Creek Provincial Park, 1219 Burloak Dr. · Relay for Life Milton on June 13, 7 p.m.-7 a.m., at Milton Fairgrounds, 136 Robert St. · Relay for Life Oakville, June 20, 7 p.m.-7 a.m., at Sts. Peter & Paul Parish, 1039 Dundas St. W . A kick-off event for the Oakville and Halton relays is being held this Saturday (April 12) at the Longo's grocery store, 269 Cornwall Rd. Participants and residents interested in taking part are invited for a luncheon between 11 a.m.-3 p.m. to learn more details about the two Relay for Life events taking place in Oakville. The Milton relay kick-off is also being held this Saturday at the Real Canadian Superstore, 820 Main St. E. from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. It features a community barbecue and family-friendly activities. Frank, who was chair of Oakville's Relay for Life last year, said the event is one-of-a-kind and provides cancer survivors a place where they can get together and celebrate their successes in the fight against cancer. It is also an emotional event that includes a survivors' victory lap and twilight ceremony where candles are lit to honour someone who has won, or lost, their battle with cancer, she added. Recalling her personal participation in last year's event, Frank said by 3 a.m., she was exhausted and tired. "But as soon as the sun came up, it was a breath of fresh air and I felt like, `I can do this and then I felt really proud that I did,'" said Frank, who is a melanoma cancer survivor and also lost her father to lung cancer. "That's exactly what a cancer patient goes through. They get through that gloom part or they're exhausted and going kids or be seniors or perhaps they're still undergoing cancer treatment." Frank noted while this year's events will be carnival-themed, each one is unique to the community it is in. The Oakville event, which is celebrating its 13th year in the community, will feature entertainment by Bare Blue Sea, Falls and The Last Minute Band. Christian Andersen, who is known as XI, will also be performing. The Burlington event, which is also in its 13th year, will feature food from Jack Astors, and refreshments and treats from Tim Hortons. There will be games and activities and entertainment from Charissa Pavlou, Dr. Robert Band, TaterVox, Westlake the Band and Andrew Hill Band. Milton, which is celebrating its 10th relay, highlights treats from Chudleigh's, refreshments from Starbucks and games and activities that include karaoke, an obstacle course courtesy of the Fire Department and a visit from the Brampton Batman. Entertainment will include the Groovy Brothers Party Band, Rock This Way Band, country/pop singer Nicole Rayy, R&B/pop-singer Carshae, teen singer Carlyn Button and cover and original band RECLASS. Collectively, CCS' Halton Unit hopes to raise $730,000 through the four events. Last year, nearly $672,000 was raised. That's what the overnight aspect mimics and I think people appreciate what these cancer survivors have gone through." Frank added it's an event she personally believes in. "It's just a place I want to be, it's what I want to do and where I can go to give back," she said. "I feel very strongly about it. I know the money goes to research, so I know my children won't have to go through what I went through and that's important to me." Frank will be participating in Oakville's Relay for Life again this year and is also taking part in the new Halton relay event, which will only go until midnight. The condensed Halton relay event was designed to allow those who enjoy all the aspects of Relay, but can't commit to the 12-hour time period to participate, she said. "Not everyone can stay up overnight and it doesn't mean they're not appreciative of the cancer journey," she said. "They might have young For related story, see Luminaries on p.7 INJURED? I Can Help!
