Some areas not safe for community cleanup this year by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 25 | Thursday, April 17, 2014 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The 23rd annual Earth Week Clean up will move ahead on Saturday, April 26, however, it will not include seven forested areas deemed by the Town to be too dangerous because of damage done during the Dec. 22 ice storm. The annual cleanup event, which is being organized by the Oakville Community Centre for Peace, Ecology and Human Rights (OCCPEHR) runs from 9-11 a.m. It will be restricted to parks with turf and trails and lakefront where the green space is open or where the Town has completed its ice storm clean up efforts. "We have been notified by the Town of Oakville's Communications Department that the ice storm of Dec. 22 has had a devastating effect on our trails and woodlands," said Stephen Dankowich, executive director of OCCPEHR. "We have been advised by the Town that it may take months to ensure safe woodland trails for the public. Concern has been ex- pressed regarding the possibility of falling tree limbs." New locations sought Dankowich said the group's site co-ordinators are currently looking for new locations that can be safely cleaned up. The cancelled locations include Brook Valley Park, Indian Ridge Trail, Joshua Valley Park, Dunvegan Park, Nipegon Trail, Oakville Woods/Oakville Park and Sixteen Hollow Park.
