Frank's dedication to ama teur hockey in Oakville and his enthusiasm for the game have been missed by everyone this season. Parents and friends attending the first annual Frank Sabatino M emorial Tournam ent were treated to a number o f extreme ly well-played hockey games in the round robin segment of the tournament. At the end of round-robin play, three teams were tied in points for the final place in the semifinals. The G M P Eagles. CKRC Investm ent W olfpack, IQF Cryogram Wranglers and Tidal Promotion Bears ultimately advanced to the semifinal round. The first semifinal game between the Eagles and Bears was finally decided in overtime on a goal by Shad Burrows of the Bears. Ricky G iesbrecht o f the Eagles had scored to tie the game with only l :20 left in reg ulation time. The second semifinal game between the Wranglers and the W olfpack was also a wellplayed game with the Wolfpack advancing to the final with a 3 -1 victory over the Wranglers. Wolfpack goals were scored by Kevin Denley, Taylor McManus and Stephen Wolski. The W rangler goal was scored by Matthew Planeta. The final game between the Wolfpack and the Bears was preceded by a short ceremony to celebrate the life o f Frank Sabatino. The final game was truly thrilling hockey, with the result not determined until triple over time when Kevin Denley scored for the Wolfpack. Following the game. Debbie Sabatino and Paul Lucas pre sented the player awards, while Matt Basso, M anager o f the Building Box. presented the winning Wolfpack team with a memorial trophy donated by the Building Box. As the Wolfpack team cele brated their hard-fought victory, parents and friends co u ld n 't help but think that Frank would have been proud o f the effort and fair play displayed during the two-day tournament by all atom red players. Sixteen Mile Creek in Oakville is now their training water. Head warmers and thermal wear have replaced sunscreen and sunglasses. But train they must, as their first competition is the senior and junior national team trials. May 25-26 in Montreal. The Burloak Canoe Club will be having their 2002 Open House and Registration this weekend, on Saturday (April 13) from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Sunday fromlO a.m. to noon. Everyone is welcome to come down to the Burloak Canoe Club on Water Street in Oakville this weekend to meet the coaches and athletes. The club had another successful year in 2001, finishing third at the national championships. The masters did one better with a silver medal. Both events were held at Lac Beauport. Individual members rose to heights beyond all expectations. Mark Oldershaw, a national team member, won every C -1 race he entered last season.
