After going up 3-0 in the first two periods Oakville went into defensive mode, executing the trap to perfection, not allowing Kingston to get the puck out o f their own end. This type o f defensive strategy is something coach Roy Gringmuth has practised all year and the team has used frequently when they are ahead in the later stages o f games. Oakville ended up winning 3-0 to bring home the gold. Scoring for Oakville were Nick Dvemechuk, Jesse Mejaski and Jeff Sebben with helpers from Sebben, Martin, Dakin, Murray, Emberly and Werstroh. A large part of O akville's success this season has been due to superb goaltending by Oliver Wren and Mike McM urrich, who have, between the two o f them, recorded a miniscule goals against average. The O akville R anger `AA' organization would like to take this opportunity to thank their sponsors for their financial support. W ithout this support the team could not have developed to the level that they are playing this year. Gold in Chatham tournament After a gold medal winning performance at the Chatham tourna ment in November, the Oakville H ornets peewee A rep team , came ever-so-close to grabbing another gold medal at the annual Mississauga Girls Hockey tournament during the Christmas break. The opening game on Friday, against Brantford, ended in a 2-1 victory, with Oakville goals by Allison Wright, assisted by Natalie Oreskovich, and by Carlee Eusepi. unassisted. Later in the day the second scheduled game was won by default, as six feet of new snow in Buffalo over Christmas prevented their team from attending the tournament. On Saturday, the girls won 3-1 over a highly touted London team that last year saw its major peewee- players win the peewee BB championships and its minor peewee players win the atom AA championship. Oakville goals were scored, by Roxanne Johnson, Taylor Metcalfe and Liz Edmunds. Assists went to Sarah Grigor and Ryan Ferguson. In the gold medal game, a first-period goal by Vaughan was enough to win them the gold medal. The Oakville girls worked hard, played aggressively, out shot and seemed in control most o f the game, but were thwarted by the Flames MVP goaltender. The girls are proud o f their silver medal finish out o f nine teams in their first tournament as an `A- team. "They really get up for the big games" says head coach Bill Metcalfe. "They know they can. play with the best and have set themselves a goal of winning against the `AA' caliber teams by February!" After beginning the year as `BB', the Peewee `A' Hornets look forward to adding to their impressive collection of top finishes among the very best o f teams at upcoming tournaments in Sudbury, Oakville and Brantford.
