The Oakville Beaver, Wednesday March 27, 2002 - A7 LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Anti-pesticide campaign not based on paranoia Thumbs down on Trudeau scholarship fund 1 am responding to the letter to the Editor in the Oakville Beaver from B.D. Hauser dated March 20, regarding an anti-pesticide campaign. I am one of the people campaigning to impose a ban on cosmetic pesticides. I know I made an "informed" decision when I became committed to so do. I deeply resent the phrases he used -- fear mongering, paranoia and innuendo. By now you know, Mr. Hauser, that the Sierra Club of Canada was just joined by the Canadian Cancer Society ih calling for a ban on cosmetic pesti cides. Dr. Barbara Whylie, director. Cancer Control Policy for the Canadian Cancer Society stated, "We call for a ban on the use o f chemicals for cosmetic purposes that have been identified as known or probable carcinogens." * The International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC), an agency o t the World Health Organization, has identified 10 commonly used pesticides is known, probable or possible carcinom gens. How are you able to ignore this? Pesticides in Canada are registered under the federal Pest Control Products Act passed in 1969. This act has not been significantly amended since that date. Today we have a new data on the health risks and damage to the environ ment cause by pesticides. Pesticides are designed to kill. As only about 1% of a pesticide reaches their intended targets, it is only common sense that it would have harmful effects on other living things, especially our children. Are we willing to accept the responsibility for this? There are many safe alternative products on the market today. There is no excuse whatsoever for using poisonous toxins on our proper ties, public or private. Paranoia indeed. KAREN SANDFORD I agree completely with writer Betty A. Hansford. Why should the taxpayers donate to a fund when many of us com pletely disagreed with what this person did to Canada? He was a multi-millionaire and his family should be the ones to provide the money if they wish to remember him in this way. JJV. THOMSON O A K V IL L E «««> APPLICANT. Henry Van Beek - Van Beek Nursery File: Z.1229.02 8 4 5 -6 6 0 1 Hi m y name is Christine Sherry. I hove had my paper route with the Oakville Beaver since Aug., 2001 and I enjoy delivering the papers very mucn. I'm 12 years old and I go to WH Morden Elementry School. I'm in grade 7 and my favorite subjects are Art, Music, Science, and Gym. I like to rent movies and watch them with my friends. I also like working on my computer. But the thing that a like doing best is swimming and skiing. Christine Sherry ' ; Proposed tax increase I excessive Where does the Town get off pro posing a 10% tax increase? - With inflation at about 2%, many of us can't afford that kind o f luxury. * The Town is growing (and it sure is) but so is your tax base, you could also cut down on a lot of things, like: Installing all those new traffic lights. Many of them way ahead o f need, if ever. * Centre curbs at intersections. What a hindrance that must be to businesses, ]not to speak o f having to go around the block forever. You are not only wasting my tax money, but also my gas money. I am sure there are many more examples o f wastefulness. " It doesn't just stop with your $84 or so on a $250,000 assessed home, the region also wants $40 or so, so now we are talking $125 or so. Live within your means. We have to. M U R R A Y BAKKER Councillors owe Flynn an apology I wonder how long Janice Caster, Jeff Knoll, Kurt Franklin, and Janice Wright will be carefully monitoring their e-mail and the local newspapers for an apology from Kevin Flynn that, in my opinion, is totally unwarranted? Perhaps these councillors should consider offering an apology to the vast majority of Oakville residents whose views, in my opinion, they did not rep resent when they supported a growth plan (OPA 198) that I believe would would open the floodgates for more urban sprawl, air pollution and traffic congestion for Oakville. Purchasing and Office Services Leave taxpayers out of Trudeau scholarship fund With reference to the letter in the Beaver dated March 20 entitled "Why is taxpayers' money being used for Trudeau scholarship fund?" Add our names to the folks who can not stomach this ludicrous waste of tax payers' money. It is a national disgrace that our money in being spent in such foolish endeavours. We should have the choice as to how our taxes are being spent. We agree with Betty Hansford that if Trudeau admirers don't mind having their money spent in this way; go right ahead but leave us out. Let Trudeau along with his philoso phies rest in peace and let us move on to more worthwhile causes.
