The women's team easily won their first three games at the 9th annual Algarve Cup in Silves, Portugal -- 7-1 over host Portugal, 4-0 over Wales and 3-0 over Scotland. Canada, this year, agreed to go into the sec ond tier to help organizers avoid a match-up between England and Portugal who must face each other in a later World Cup qualifying match. In consideration of this, the Canadian team, with a full schedule this year, went with a young line-up, including eight members of the national U-19 team, including Lang, a Grade 10 student at St. Thomas Aquinas. The Blue Stars will be taking on England's best, thanks to (1-r): Karl Schemp of the Oakville Kiwanis club, coach Phil Iafrate, Prem ier Soccer Academy director Ducan Wilde and Mike Krog of Locust sports who designed the special uniform. "With the number of games scheduled for 2002, this year's tournament will give me an opportunity to see how younger players per form in a top-level competition," said head coach Even Pellerud. There's also an ulterior motive. "Our under-19 players will benefit from the experience as they prepare for the FIFA Under19 World Championships in August in Canada." Lang's first international cap came in the opening 3-0 win against Scotland as she came on as a sub. National team veteran Andrea Neil scored all three goals. In the 4-0 win over Wales in the second game, Lang picked up her first and second goals. Her first goal with the senior national team came in the 63rd minute on a good drive from inside the box, making the score 2-0. Lang also closed out the scoring with a left foot drive in the far comer. In the 7-1 win over Portugal in the third game, Lang came on as a second half substitute with her team sporting a 3-0 lead. Lang took no time at all to get back on the scoreboard with a goal in the 48th minute, and adding another one in the 81st minute. UPCOMING According to the tourney format, Canada, as winner of the C-group, closed out the tourna ment with a match against the fourth-place team of the A group, Finland, yesterday (Thursday). Peter McCusker · O akville B eaver Soccer stars take on England's best Oakville-based Premier Soccer Academy is presenting a ten-day soccer tour to England this week on behalf of the Oakville Blue Stars under12 rep team. The Blue Stars are currently defending their indoor league title following a successful league, cup and regional treble winning season in the summer. Coach Phil Iafrate agreed to pitch his team into this Premier Soccer Academy tour program, to expose his players to international competition and to allow diem to experience how their coun terparts in England, with equal ambition, prac tice and play on a regular basis. Academy director Duncan Wilde has been working with the team throughout the winter in an effort to prepare the players for five intense games during the tour.
