The funds represent a signifi cant contribution to the Transforming Sheridan Capital Campaign, and will support new facilities currently under con struction and scheduled to open in September at Sheridan's Trafalgar Road campus. Gilgan has also agreed to serve as co-chair of the cam paign (the Honourary Chair is W illiam G. Davis, former Premier of Ontario). "In order for a city to be a good place to live, it has to pro vide exciting educational and career opportunities for young people. We must prevent the exodus of our bright, ambitious, creative next generation by cre ating those opportunities right here," said Gilgan. "This means having exceptional educational facilities available locally, that not only prepare young people for exciting futures, but also serve to attract and retain the employers who can offer chal lenging, well-paid jobs. It's my experience that the presence of a vibrant post-secondary institu tion also helps to foster new business start-ups. thus renew ing the creative and economic vitality of the region overall." The TTC. which has also received significant funding support from the Town of Oakville, is a new business accelerator geared to. digital media entrepreneurs. The Sheldon Levy Centre will be home to the Communications, Culture and Information Technology (CC1T) joint pro gram with the University of Toronto at Mississauga. "Mr. Gilgan's generous dona tion will support and enrich the community-based partnerships at the heart of these initiatives," said Dr. Robert Turner, president and CEO of Sheridan College. "The Sheridan Elder Research Centre is partnering with the VON-Halton to serve elders in our community." Sheridan and the Oakville Economic Development Alliance are working together to foster new business growth through The Technology Transfer Centre. The CCIT program is one of three joint-degree programs offered with the University of Toronto at Mississauga, and the fruit of a 30-year institutional col laboration. He said the area needs an office building, or other employment location that will house considerably more than the 50 or 75 employees expect ed to work at the car lot. in order to make it viable for someone to open a nearby restaurant or cof fee shop. He adds that a car lot. with parking for more than 250 cars, is no more appropriate in that location than it would be on one of the main comers of down town Oakville. The O M B's decision has also angered Ward 5 Councillor Jeff Knoll, who sat through most of the eight-day-long hearing. He is upset that the board has overturned what he believes was a well-thought out deci sion, made by local councillors, and strongly supported by resi dents. "1 find the whole thing extremely frustrating." said Knoll. " It makes a councillor question why we are even there. Somebody (in the province) obviously doesn't value or trust the decision-making skills of local councils." Knoll believes the neigh bourhood remains firmly opposed to the dealership. "This is bad plartning. and frankly, it's bad business because the people of this com munity are not going to forget this very soon," said Knoll. " 1 think they're going to- have a hard time selling a car in this community." The three-acre corner lot. formerly owned by Oakville Hydro, will be home to a 2().()(X) sq.-ft. sales building. It will be built by Daimler Chrysler, which spent about $90.0(H) cleaning up the site. The company has also pro moted the idea of a three-storey live-work building on a western remnant of the lot, but has said it has no plans to build it. Knoll descrihes the livework building as "irrelevant," suggesting that there's no guar antee such a building would ever materialize if Daimler Chrysler sells the land. FINAL Wastewater treatment plant and algae meeting Jan. 29 A public forum on the algae problem on Lake Ontario shorelines and the proposed expansion of the Mid Halton Wastewater Treatment Plant is being held Jan. 29. Halton Regional Councillors Kevin Flynn and Allan Elgar are hosting the meet ing. It will be held at 7:30 p.m. at the Halton Region Administration Building. Bronte Road. The meeting is a follow up to separate meetings on these two subjects that were held on the same night last year. One meeting was hosted by the Lake Ontario Algae Action Committee and dealt with available research on increasing algae growth in Lake Ontario The other meeting was hosted by Elgar and dealt with Halton Region's Water and Wastewater Master Plan, specifically with the proposed expansion to the Mid Halton Wastewater Treatment Plant.
