In the five-set senior final, the 7-2 Eagles faced the 9-0 King's Christian Collegiate Cavaliers, a game that became an instant classic. After the Cavs opened up a first-set lead of 5-0 on serve, they were never really threatened, taking the opener 25-18. Power forward Phil Reinders established himself for King's Christian in the second set. Although the Eagles opened up a 6-0 lead to start the set, Reinders had four straight points off the serve to tie the set at 11. But Cavs mental mistakes, combined with some tough play by the Eagles, allowed Abbey Park to open up a 20-13 lead. Cue the miscues by the team in blue. They allowed the Cavaliers back into it, and at set point leading 24-21, the Eagles called a timeout. That made the difference as Abbey Park closed it out for a second-set 25-21 win. Set 3 was highlighted by some incredible spike saves by both sides in order to keep lengthy rallies alive. King's Christian prevailed 25-21. Down, the Eagles werent out. Set 4 featured some of the tightest defensive play of the final. Neither team had more than a two-point lead until Abbey Park built an 18-13 advantage. A Cavs timeout seemed to rejuvenate them. King's Christian chipped away at the lead, picking its spots on the floor seemingly at will to score key points, rallying for a 22-21 lead. But the Eagles held tough, eventually taking the set 25-23. By the fifth set, conditioning, and substitutions were key in the back-and-forth affair. With King's Christian serving to stay in the match down 14-13, an Eagles wall teamed up to block a Cavaliers return, pulling out a deciding-set 15-13 triumph and sending the Cavs to their first loss of the season. For Eagles senior head coach Linda Thompson, it was about trying to contain the standout Reinders. "He was starting to hold back on his hits, and as the match went on, we were able to pick up on those hits," said Thompson. Thompson says it was about her players coming together as a team, even facing elimination down two sets to one, and not about one or two individual players. "It was a team effort. It takes a team to win, not just two or three players. And we were consistent, and we had the heart to win."
