ErinoakKids site near new Oakville hospital made `sense' continued from p.28 "Because we will have more space, we will be able to see more children in a better period of time. It's good news all-around and we're very, very excited about the possibilities going forward." Scheduled to open in early 2017 near the new Oakville hospital, the facility will offer numerous autism services including intensive behavioural intervention and applied behaviour analysis, an infant hearing and blind low-vision service, physiotherapy and occupational therapy, speech and language services, assistive devices resource services, medical, nursing and specialty medical services and family support services. The placement of the Oakville centre near the new hospital "made sense" for ErinoakKids, Fewtrell said, as it will be accessible for clients and their families. "It's going to be a growing hub for Oakville and Halton, so we really wanted to be in an area where we were able to provide those good services in an accessible way. It also (fit) nicely within our budget and there was some land available there," said Fewtrell. As the Dundas Street area becomes "the hub that it will be," there will be other service providers nearby that ErinoakKids will work with to serve the community, she said. The Oakville site will be approximately 73,000 square feet in size, while Brampton's facility, the largest of the three, will be approximately 121,000 square feet and Mississauga's building will be approximately 93,000 square feet. The new facilities are expected to achieve a LEED silver certification for design sustainability. "It is sitting a little bit north of the new Oakville hospital on 5.2 acres. They're just in the midst of beginning to construct the extension of Burnhamthorpe Road and Third Line, but we'll be right at the intersection of those extensions that are planned for the future," said Fewtrell. Construction on the three facilities is scheduled to begin in April 2015 and will finish by December 2016, according to Fewtrell. At the peak of activity, the construction will create approximately 200 on-site jobs across the three sites. She noted 200-225 of its 650 staff will work at the Oakville location once it opens. "(PHP) is now going to do a little bit of site work in the next little while. As soon as the weather gets a little bit better, they will be doing some fill of the site. We're looking at roughly 1618 months for the construction," said Fewtrell. To equip the new centres, ErinoakKids has launched a $20-million In My Dreams campaign. Currently in its "quiet" phase, Fewtrell said the campaign will move to a "more aggressive stage" in the spring of 2015. "We will be moving some of our existing equipment into those new facilities, but because we're tripling our size and adding a lot more specialized equipment than we've had in the past, we have a capital campaign of this magnitude," said Fewtrell. While ErinoakKids is "very heartened by our preliminary results," Fewtrell said, a tally of the money raised won't be released publicly until next spring. Groundbreaking ceremonies for the facilities are expected to take place at that time. "We've been advocating for these new facilities for almost a decade. We are very thrilled about the fact that this project has been approved. It will allow us to really serve our community in a far more accessible and appropriate way," said Fewtrell. "They (children and youths) are really an extraordinary group and they deserve these new facilities." ErinoakKids is Ontario's largest children's treatment centre, serving more than 14,500 children and youths annually in Halton, Peel, Dufferin and for some services, Waterloo and Wellington.
