This service is offered in Spanish and is free o f charge to women who have experienced sex ual violence. Child-care is available. There is a potluck lunch every sec ond W ednesday o f the month at 12 p.m. M ulticultural D rop-In: On Fridays from I - 4 p.m. at the SAVIS office at Hopedale Mall. Ste. 227. in Oakville a free drop-in for women from all cul tures who have experi enced violence sometime in their lifetime is offered. This service is conducted in English. Women who attend can enjoy learning from the diversity of cul tures. ages, beliefs, social classes all women bring through sharing stories, cultural traditions, crafts and food. Every fourth Friday o f the month women and their children can attend a potluck lunch at 12 p.m. where women can share and enjoy diverse food. Child-care is provided. Women can attend a monthly educational ses sion on topics of interest such as: common stresses for newcomers including stress m anagem ent (among other issues), iso lation. poverty, the impact o f wife abuse, sexual abuse within marriage, parenting skills, healthy relation ships, etc.. plus participate in a celebration every March 8 of International Woman's Day. The history and important of this event is explored from a diverse multicultural perspective. Although there is a therapeutic and communi ty benefit to the craft mak ing in the group, respond ing to women who have suffered or are suffering from abuse and/or violence is the main focus. In addition. the Multicultural Outreach program also has an annu al Christm as Drive to ensure families in need have food and presents for Christmas. Local Halton businesses and organiza tions arc asked to adopt a family. The Outreach Program provides sponsors with a wish list form from the particular family. In addition, they collect donations such as new toys, w inter clothing, practical items, toiletries, food vouchers, gift certificates, etc.. during the first week of November. Family identities arc kept confidential. In the third week of July an Annual Sum m er Picnic is offered to women of single parent families and their chil dren and in the first week of September an Annual Back to School program where single mothers who are also sur vivors o f sexual violence received school supplies for the children. Local community churches have assisted with this program in providing school supplies. The Thursdays in Black campaign began in the Middle East in the early 1990`s and has spread world wide with a black sash campaign in Africa and other Thursdays in Black cam paigns in Europe. A ustralia Asia, etc. To join the Thursdays in Black campaign, wear Black on each Thursday throughout May to show your support for the eradication o f violence against Women.
