Some of the province's best `88 birth year hockey players will be in Oakville this weekend for the kick-off to the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) minor midget playoffs. This 10-team play down features the OMHA's South Central Triple A (SCTA) division, of which Oakville finished in first place. Admission to all games is free. The tourney format has the teams divided into two five-team divisions. Each division plays its own fourgame round robin with the top two teams from each division advancing to Sunday playoff action. It's a cross-over format with first playing second. The Rangers finished league play with an impres sive 28-8-4 record and a siz zling 2.10 goals against aver age. The teams are now geared up for the league round robin tournament in Niagara Falls this weekend (March 11-14) that will determine the SCTA's two representatives to the OMHA final tourna ment the following weekend. The Rangers are in a round robin group with sec ond place Brampton, seventh place Niagara Falls, eighth place Welland and ninth place Guelph. After the round robin, the top two teams crossover against the top two teams from the third through sixth group with the winners of the single game playoffs heading to the OMHA's in York Simcoe. In the key four-point battle over Brampton, the Rangers came through with a superb effort at both ends of the ice. Mike Binnington made one sensational save after another in the opening frame against the hard charging Battalion. When the dust had cleared, despite a pronounced differ ence in shots and chances, the Rangers held a 3-0 first peri od lead and never looked back. Stephen Wheeler led the attack with a goal and three assists. John Davitsky bagged a pair of goals while David Denino and David Dobrinsky also found the mark.
