www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, January 23, 2015 | 16 Homeward Bound Halton offers new lease on life by Herb Garbutt Oakville Beaver Staff Rebecca sat on her kitchen floor crying. She had just returned home to find that her hydro had been cut off. She had recently completed a test for academic upgrading in hopes of returning to school, but was hit with a grim reality -- how could she afford school when she was struggling to provide the necessities for herself and her two sons? Raised herself by a single mother who suffered from mental illness, there were signs that her oldest son was also struggling with mental health issues. Rebecca had to leave her job to care for him. As she sat in her darkened apartment, worrying that her son would soon be home Fight fat over 40 at Metabolic Care Clinic Over 40 and struggling to lose weight (possibly gaining)? If so, you are not alone. Forty seems to be the magic number where females think their metabolism has gone kaput. Overnight the midsection gets a jelly layer, happiness seems a thing of the past and a glass of wine soothes the soul. Forty is not just a number pulled from a hat; it is around the time that body begins a major hormonal transformation. Hormones begin a roller coaster ride, and your metabolism and emotions follow. You cannot opt out of this ride, instead buckle up, sit back and raise your arms on the down! Everything you don't want to drop is dropping: your metabolism, your muscle, your happiness, your libido. And alternatively all that you want to stay still is rising: your body fat, your anxiety, your mid section and your craving for sweets. The solution is not as black and white as we would like it to be. When mastering your hormones, you cannot isolate and manage one hormone. Hormones work together and when one is stressed the others follow. So before you look at managing your estrogen and progesterone (the top two sex hormones), keep in mind that your cortisol, insulin and thyroid will also need attention. Metabolic Care Clinic (MCC) is here to help, with more than 10 years of experience in the Oakville area, our team has seen hundreds of women conquer their weight at this sensitive age. The solution has not been the calories in vs. calories out game, instead results are seen with a more holistic approach. MCC combines research from leading hormone experts with successful nutritional strategies to develop a nutrition plan to fight fat over 40. This plan will first develop a lifestyle and supplement guide, specific to your symptoms. Our team will then design a nutrition plan to support your personal and lifestyle needs. It was an invitation from Home Suite Hope (HSH) to meet about a new program called Homeward Bound. · · · Homeward Bound Halton was officially launched Wednesday at Sheridan College. A collaborative effort between Home Suite Hope, Halton Region, the Oakville Community Foundation (OCF) and Sheridan College, the program will help 15 single mothers facing economic hardship -- five in each of the next three years -- get a college education. Homeward Bound Halton is modeled after Toronto's Woodgreen Community Services' program that has helped more than 150 women graduate and find jobs since it was established in 2004. The Halton program sees each partner provide something that on its own would help, but wouldn't necessarily address other concerns to allow the participants to return to school. For instance, the OCF will pay for the participants' tuition and books. A significant contribution, but it wouldn't allow a single mother to return to school because she would still have expenses, such as rent and daycare. "I had been looking into going to college and was overwhelmed with the cost of everything from tuition fees and books to travelling costs and daycare bills," said Linda, a 32-year-old single mother of three. (Her name, like Rebecca's changed, and their stories provided through interviews by HSH). "I was feeling like it would never be possible." HSH executive director Michelle Pommells said the goal was to find a long-term fix to break the cycle of poverty. "How can we get a solution that is not a BandAid?" she said. "How can we help these women reach a whole new level of self-sufficiency?" see Program on p.24 new year new YOU! Are you over 40 struggling to lose weight... possibly gaining weight?
