Halton Region giving the green light to red light cameras by Bob Mitchell Special to the Beaver 15 | Friday, February 27, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Halton's red light cameras are here to stay -- at least until 2017 -- and more intersections will soon join the program. A total of seven red light cameras have been operating across the Region since 2011. But based on up-to-date collision and traffic volume information, another six red light cameras should be running by the end of the month or early next month. "The red light cameras have demonstrated to be an effective safety tool in reducing right- angle collisions and changing driver behaviour at signalized intersections....," Planning and Public Works Commissioner Jim Harnum said in his report presented last week to Halton's Planning and Public Works Committee and approved by regional council Wednesday. "For intersections in Halton currently equipped with red-light cameras, there has been an approximate 38 per cent reduction in right-angle collisions when compared to years prior to the red light camera installation." The new cameras have already been running in test mode, but should be online for good at the following intersections: Appleby Line and Mainway and Guelph Line and Davidson Court/Mountainside Drive in Burlington; Derry Road and James Snow Parkway, and Derry Road and Ontario Street in Milton; and Upper Middle Road and Oxford Avenue in Oakville. They join the existing red light cameras in place in Burlington at Brant and Dundas streets; at Brant Street and North Service Road; and at Guelph Line and Upper Middle Road. A red-light camera has also been running in Halton Hills at 10 Side Road and Ninth Line; and Trafalgar and Derry roads in Milton. Another red light camera has been catching violators in Oakville at Trafalgar Road and Leighland Avenue. n ow o f f e r i n g P h ys i ot h e r a P y o s t eo Pat h y at h l e t i c t h e r a P y Christine Richard proudly serving the Oakville community Christine is always here at your time of need or when planning ahead.
