The North Bay native, who joined OAK a few years ago after stops in St. Albert, Alta., Toronto and Kirkland Lake, won the women's 100-metre backstroke Wednesday at the Team Canada Trials in Toronto. Bouchard's time of 1:00.20 qualified her for the Pan Am Games in Toronto as well as the FINA World Championships in Kazan, Russia. OAK teammate Tessa Cieplucha also won a national title Wednesday, claiming the women's 1,500m freestyle in a time of 16:47.84 -- nearly seven seconds faster than her time in qualifying. That event, however, will not be contested at the Pan Am Games. Oakville native Tera Van Beilen, who now represents Vancouver's UBC Dolphins, was second to Toronto's Martha McCabe in the women's 200m butterfly. Van Beilen's time of 2:27.76 easily met the `A' time standard, which does not automatically qualify the 2014 national champion for Pan Ams but does make her eligible to be the second Canadian to race in the event at the Games. OAK's Gamal Assaad earned silver Wednesday as well, placing second in the men's 50m butterfly. That event also will not be contested at Pan Ams. Other OAK highlights from Day 1 of the Team Canada Trials included six top-25 finishers in the women's 1,500m free (in addition to Cieplucha's win, Lauren Lalumiere was seventh, Mabel Zavaros was 11th, Alexa Fabugais-Inaba was 14th, Hannah Burgess was 21st and Keri-Lyn Copeland was 25th), Mack Darragh's seventh-place effort in the men's 200m breaststroke, Jacqueline Keire's 10th-place finish in the women's 200m freestyle, and two top-20 placings in the men's 800m freestyle (Mackenzie Hamill was 12th, Ali Baki was 16th). The Team Canada Trials continue through to Saturday. Morning heats begin at 10 a.m. each day, with evening finals sessions starting at 6 p.m.
