Halton Healthcare's Navigator Program Reaching out to children and youth in crisis New equipment is arriving at the New Oakville Hospital daily. Now that the construction of the New Oakville Hospital is almost complete, we have begun receiving the more than 39,000 pieces of new equipment and furniture that will help our clinicians deliver patient care in the 1.6 million square foot facility. It will take three months for everything to arrive, including more than 6,100 pieces of furniture on a single day. To date, we have received the pharmacy's new robotic pill picker machine and 137 individual pieces of lab equipment already assembled for the new state-ofthe-art automation line. The new hospital will have two computerized tomography (CT) scans and three Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) machines, all with direct access to the emergency department. One CT scanner and two MRIs have already arrived. A crane was required to lift the MRIs from a flatbed truck and in through an opening in the side of the building. Construction will continue until the end of July, when Halton Healthcare Services will take ownership of the building and begin the process of preparing the building over the following four months for full occupancy and our move in December 2015. The current Oakville Trafalgar Memorial Hospital at 327 Reynolds Street will close on the same day the new hospital opens in December. The date will be announced in August. Halton Healthcare's Navigator Program helps children in distress throughout the Halton region. As its name implies, this program is comprised of a group of specially trained social workers and child/youth counsellors who help these children and their families navigate the healthcare system. The Navigators are assigned to children and adolescents in need, following a crisis visit to one of HHS' Emergency Departments, after a referral from a family physician to Child and Youth Outpatient Services, or following discharge from the Child and Adolescent Psychiatric Inpatient Service (CAPIS). A Navigator intervenes with the child and their family immediately to help sort out their needs and provide them with the tools required to manage the crisis and sustain wellness until a longer term treatment is established. Introduced in 2011, this Program has already helped over 350 children and adolescents.
