Mercedes-Benz 10K crowns seventh new race champion Seven years in, the Mercedes-Benz Oakville 10K is still looking for its first repeat champion. Burlington's Fred Karanja became the annual 10K's seventh overall winner, finishing the race in 34 minutes, 2.4 seconds to top the field of 914 runners. Oakville's Eric Labelle was second, crossing the line 28 seconds behind Karanja while Milton's Barry Dalton was third to complete an all-Halton podium. Lucy Njeri, remains the race's only two-time winner, taking first in the women's race in 2010 and 2012. Spencer earns bronze at world U18 Oakville's Matt Spencer won a bronze medal as Canada defeated Switzerland 5-2 Sunday at the IIHF Under-18 World Hockey Championships. Canada built an early 3-0 lead but the tournament hosts scored twice in the final three minutes of the opening period to cut the lead to one. Spencer set up Glenn Gawdin midway through the second period to stem Switzerland's momentum and Canada added an insurance goal two minutes later. Spencer, a defenceman for the Peterborough Petes, finished the tournament with two assists in seven games. Canada went 4-0 in round-robin play, beating Latvia 11-6, Switzerland 4-1, the Czech Republic 3-2 and then overcoming a 2-0 deficit to edge Finland 3-2. The Patriots beat Kingston 6-1 last Wednesday in Game 7 of the Ontario Junior Hockey League final. The 20-year-old had nine goals and 28 points in 35 games for the Patriots this season. Feric had points in five of the seven games in the series and finished the OJHL playoffs with five goals and 13 assists in 23 games. The Patriots are now playing in the Dudley Hewitt Cup, the Central Canadian Jr. A championship, in Fort Frances. Toronto lost its opening game of the four-team tournament 2-1 to the host Lakers.
