The 14th annual Eddies Gala Awards evening will be held Tuesday, May 26 at the Burlington Performing Arts Centre (BPAC), 440 Locust St. Celebrating student movie-making The Eddies celebrates student movie making by recognizing technical and creative achievements. The competition is open to all Halton public school board elementary and high school students. A minimum of eight people comprise the judging panel for each year's Eddies submissions. Many of the judges are involved in music, live action or animated lm production as a career. Previous Eddies award winners have gone on to work in the lm and television industry. Ana Yavari, an ex-Eddies winner, was a judge last year. She has been an editor on TV series The Tudors, The Borgias and the new Showtime series Penny Dreadful. The 2014 Eddies attracted a record 190 entries, smashing the previous record of 154 set last year. More than 30 award categories There will be 34 category and technical awards handed out as well as two Palme D'Eddys, one each for the best in show among high school and elementary entries. "There are so many students now making videos over the weekend with friends and posting them on YouTube. The technology is such that parents can afford to buy a DSLR camera that produces good video," and the kids can use editing programs, said Jeff Bowman, the Halton board's Multi-Media/Communications Administrator. "Some of these kids are operating on a very high technical level," Bowman added. All Eddies submissions have to be under 10 minutes in length with commercials or public service announcements (PSAs) needing to be one minute or less. Secondary school student lms are judged separately from elementary entries, but they all compete in the same categories such as comedy, drama, music videos and animation. BPAC's doors open at 6 p.m. with the Eddies awards gala at 7 p.m. followed by screenings of this year's winning entries. The event is free and open to the public. OCPA announces entire 2015-16 season The Oakville Centre for the Performing Arts (OCPA) has announced, for the rst time, its entire 2015-16 season of shows in the spring. Previously, the OCPA launched its upcoming season in two parts -- in the spring and fall. "This year, we've changed up our approach and are announcing our entire season now to make things easier for our patrons as they plan their year, and assist them in their ticket-purchasing decisions," Robin Howarth, OCPA manager, said in a media release. "I am very pleased to announce this eclectic group of performers that make up the 201516 season -- one of the best seasons yet. Residents don't have to leave town to experience internationally-celebrated performers, comedians and, for the rst time, authors in our new `In Conversation With' speakers series." This season's line-up includes a wide array of shows from internationally-renowned performers to local up-and-coming artists. Performers include: Howie Mandel; Bruce Cockburn; 54-40 Unplugged; The Trews ­ Acoustic; Steve Hackett; Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood Live; The Cat in the Hat; Charlotte's Web, The Devin Cuddy Band, Jesse Cook, and The Wailers. The OCPA's new speaker series will feature guests such as: David Suzuki, Lawrence Hill and Bob McDonald. The 2015-16 season will also include: · Studio Sessions -- featuring emerging artists in the intimate, 120-seat Studio Theatre; · Family Series -- sponsored by Whole Foods Market, every child who attends an Oakville Family Series performance will leave with a health snack.
