www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, June 4, 2015 | 10 D O W N T O W N O A K V I L L E ANN 42UAL nd Bishops will advise, it's time to move forward: trustee continued from p.5 "Who is better positioned to ensure the curriculum is congruent with Catholic values than the bishops of the Catholic Church? And even if parents are still not satisfied, even if parents still believe the bishops of the Catholic church did not make it Catholic enough, they can opt out and teach it at home, however they choose.... It's time for us to move forward." School trustees have no power over the curriculum handed down by the ministry, said Halton Hills trustee John Mark Rowe. "Some parents have quoted inappropriate teacher prompts, which is the exact area which the Institute of Catholic Education is modifying, with the support of the Ontario government," added Rowe. "That is why we must wait for the revisions before requesting changes because then requests can be specific to the areas of concern," he said. Rowe said he hoped parents sent their arguments to the Ontario government because that is where the power to affect change lies and not with the trustees. "I have faith in the Association of the Catholic Bishops of Ontario to provide our schools with a theologically-balanced curriculum... I do not support a motion to promise something which school boards have no power to promise," said Rowe. Michael said she had consulted Bishop Douglas Crosby, of the Hamilton Diocese, "to seek his advice on this most delicate matter." "The bishop is encouraging us as a board of trustees to stay united with the bishops, have faith in our Catholic leaders and in the Institute for Catholic Education, to produce resources that will assist our Catholic teachers to implement the revised curriculum in a way that will stay true to our Catholic principles... we need to move forward together for the good of unified Catholic education in the future. We need to preserve the future of publicly-funded Catholic education." In light of Bishop Crosby's advice and legal advice secured by HCDSB Director of Education Paula Dawson, Michael said approving the proposed motion "would be an absolute reckless and irresponsible move by us as a board of trustees." Failure to implement the new curriculum as required could result in an investigation of the board and a directive by ministry ordering compliance, said Dawson. Failure to comply could also result in an Order by Cabinet for supervision of the Halton Catholic school board, she added.
