An inter-faith fundraising campaign is under way to bring a refugee Syrian family to Oakville. About $35,000 is needed to get the family of seven started in their new life in Canada and the congregation of Maple Grove United Church has raised more than $8,000 so far. For the past several weeks a unique stone sculpturing art show, under the direction of Zimbabwe-born sculptor Chaka Chikodzi, was held on the lawns of the Oakville church and 10 per cent of all sales were donated to the fund. Written in Stone featured about 90 pieces of art, many hand-carved from volcanic rock from Zimbabwe. The pieces were displayed outside -- and for sale -- through June. Besides Chikodzi's stone sculptures, the art show also featured the work of fellow Zimbabwean artists Peter Chidzonga and Godfrey Mutenga. Money for the Syrian family is also being raised through pledges at ISNA Mosque in Mississauga and the local Shaarei-Beth El Congregation of Halton while various other churches have been approached and have either indicated they will raise funds or are considering the project, said Rev. Dr. Morar MurrayHayes of Maple Grove United Church. see Family on p.34 Artist Chaka Chikodzi curated the Written in Stone outdoor Zimbabwe stone sculpture exhibition and sale at Maple Grove United Church last month as part of an ongoing fundraising campaign by several local faith groups to bring a Syrian refugee family to Canada by 2016. | photo by Nikki Wesley Oakville Beaver (Follow on Twitter @ halton_photog or facebook.com/HaltonPhotog) BULK MULCH, SOIL, SAND, COMPOST, INTERLOCK, STEPS, AGGREGATES, ARMOUR STONE, JUMBO FLAGSTONE, PIZZA OVEN, FIRE PITS AND MORE!!
