Lady Hawks player youngest Canadian at U19 worlds Blue Devils suffer first loss of season Oakville native Aurora Cordingley was the youngest player selected to the Canadian team for the FIL Rathbones Women's Under-19 Lacrosse World Championship this month in Scotland. Cordingley, who was born in 1999, plays rep lacrosse for the Oakville Lady Hawks and attends school at The Hill Academy in Vaughan. She has already locked up an NCAA Division 1 scholarship at Johns Hopkins University, where she will begin her studies in the fall of 2017. The Canadian U19 women's team, Aurora Cordingley ranked third in the world, features 18 players. The team was selected in January, when tryouts drew 60 applicants recommended by various scouts. This year's U19 world championships, which began July 23 and conclude Aug. 1, is the largest in history, with nearly 400 participants representing 15 countries. Nine local bantams contribute to Ontario's national gold Nine Oakville Minor Lacrosse Association players helped Ontario to bantam boys' national box lacrosse gold last weekend in Saskatoon. Oakville's Justin Sykes (three), Matthew Wright, and Bradley Somers scored goals in Ontario's 7-2 victory over British Columbia in Saturday's final. Also contributing to Ontario's 6-0 showing at the tournament were Matthew Hill, Chris Dong, Jack Travassos, Bryce Cordingley, Ryan O'Hara and Jonathan Gagliardi. Oakville resident Troy Cordingley, the head coach of the NLL 's Buffalo Bandits and former bench boss of the Toronto Rock, was an assistant coach of the team. Rock rules four of six house league divisions It was good to be Rock at the OMLA's recent Brian Kruse Memorial House League Gala Tournament. Teams nicknamed the Rock won the paperweight, novice, bantam and midget titles in the competition, which featured nearly 400 players across the OMLA's seven house league divisions. Following are scores from the division championship games: · Paperweight: Rock 6, Titans 0 · Tyke: Roughnecks 8, Titans 3 · Novice: Rock 5, Rush 3 · Peewee: Roughnecks 7, Titans 1 · Bantam: Rock 5, Bandits 4 · Midget: Rock 5, Buzz 2 The tournament, named in memory of former OMLA volunteer and local lacrosse enthusiast Brian Kruse, seeded teams based on their results from their 10 regularseason games. All teams played at least three times and many of the games were closely-contested. The Oakville Blue Devils will find themselves in a familiar position Sunday at Sheridan College: trying to rebound from a regular-season loss. Oakville suffered its first-ever defeat in League1 Ontario soccer play last weekend, dropping a 1-0 decision to the Woodbridge Strikers at Sheridan. Woodbridge's Christian Caval- lini scored in the 48th minute for the only goal of the contest, which featured seven cautions and four ejections. The Blue Devils now have 11 wins, one tie and one loss in their inaugural League1 campaign. Oakville's game this Sunday will be against the Vaughan Azzurri.
