The fall Compost Giveaway takes place Saturday, Sept. 12, from 8 a.m.-4:30 p.m., at the Halton Waste Management Site (HWMS), 5400 Regional Rd. 25, Milton. There will also be two Special Waste Drop-off Days on Saturday, Sept. 19 at Sheridan College, 1430 Trafalgar Rd., Oakville, and Saturday, Oct. 24 at Mohawk Raceway, 9430 Guelph Line, in Campbellville, Milton -- both run 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Compost Giveaway Event During the one-day, fall Compost Giveaway event, the Region will offer free compost to residents. Those who participate are asked to bring their own bags or containers (a maximum of seven garbage bags or equivalent per household) and a shovel in order to bag their own compost. In addition, residents are asked to bring a non-perishable food item or cash donation for Halton-area food banks. During the spring Compost Giveaway in May, approximately 3,610 residents picked up approximately 1,500 tonnes of compost created from all of the leaves, brush, tree and garden trimmings collected curbside and dropped off at the HWMS. Residents also donated $7,878 and 3,640 kilograms of food to local food banks as part of the event. For more information, visit halton.ca/ compost. Special Waste Drop-off Days To make the recycling of electronic and household hazardous waste more convenient for residents, Halton holds seven free Special Waste Drop-off Days throughout the year. Approximately, 2,000 residents dropped off electronic or household hazardous waste during the events held earlier this year. Those who participate can drop off acceptable items, such as: pesticides, paint, motor oil, antifreeze, propane tanks, computers, stereos, TVs and DVD players.
