"That final game was the best they've played all season," said coach Kerry Williamson. The victory continued a remarkable run by Oakville, which claimed the under-14 title for the eighth straight year. Williamson said the program for young players that has been developed by the Crusaders is a big reason for the success. "The junior and mini programs have easily double, sometimes triple, the number of players of anyone in the Ontario Rugby Union," Williamson said. "That's a testament to the junior rugby programs the Crusaders have." Oakville went undefeated in ORU play this season. It rolled over Oshawa 73-5 in the semifinals before running into Brantford, its toughest opponent of the season. Oakville had been the only team to beat the Harlequins this season, scoring a 15-point victory. In the championship game, Oakville jumped in front with a try 10 minutes into the game. Brantford quickly tied it up with a try of its own. Oakville regained the lead before the half and then shut down its opponents in the second half while adding three tries to seal the victory. Williamson said because the Crusaders introduce players to the sport at a young age, many have been playing together for as many as six years. He said the players have continued to refine their skills since joining Crusaders. "It's all the same skills, but they learn to do them faster and execute them with more accuracy and proficiency," he said. Still, there were a few first-time rugby players on this year's team. But regardless of their experience, the Oakville coach said the team was able to perform as a cohesive unit. "It's a very well-rounded team," he said. We have a few standouts, but they wouldn't be able to do what they do without their teammates. Definitely team play was our strength. They all played really well together. The team of university-aged men, many of whom grew up playing ball hockey together on small southeast Oakville street Hardy Crescent, finished second at last year's nationals in Kingston. The Heroes look to take the next step at this year's PlayOn! Redwood Cup 4-on-4 street hockey elite nationals Sept. 30-Oct. 3 in Lethbridge, Alta., after qualifying for the championships with a victory at a regional tournament earlier this year at Toronto's Woodbine Racetrack.
