continued from p.6 their hydro bill, they can't afford to pay their Union Gas," said Marville. "They are struggling and I hear this almost every day when I go to the doors. I meet somebody who is living in a home they can no longer really support. "I think that is not a municipal issue alone. It is not a provincial issue alone. It is a national issue because these are the human beings that helped to build our country, they have invested in our country, they have helped contribute to our country and we owe them more than what we are giving them." Newcomers to Canada who cannot find work because a lack of "Canadian experience" and youths who cannot find work because of the economy are other issues Marville plans to tackle if elected. She said she has already put together a "youth think tank," which sees people between the ages of 18-35 share their experiences and ideas about how the current situation could be improved. "These are well-educated people with degrees, they have checked off all those boxes and yet they are not succeeding. We have to work to help that group, that generation of people. It is our responsibility.... We need to help them understand their value in this community, but also in this world," said the NDP candidate. The economy is another area Marville is passionate about, stating an NDP government would lower taxes on small businesses. Marville said she is a firm believer that it's not about choosing between the economy or the environment, stating Canadians can be respectful of the use of fossil fuel while understanding Canada cannot indefinitely depend on those resources and that there needs to be an investment in green energy and new technology. Marville said her approach has led to positive change before. She developed the first employee health and wellness centre at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, a project that, over six years, Che Marville, NDP -- Oakville reached 8,000 people, mostly nurses, significantly reducing their stress levels. She emphasized this project did not cost a lot of money and noted great things can happen when you collaborate, listen effectively and examine different options instead of discounting them. Marville began her career in the museum sector, starting out as a project manager for the Ontario Science Centre. She later co-founded the Children's Own Media Museum. She was senior advisor for Human Resources and Wellbeing for Toronto's University of Health Network. Marville is currently strategic advisor for the national seniors' wellness program for Origin Retirement Community, where she focuses on preventative health care for patients and caregivers. As head of her own consulting agency, she says she has worked with thousands of health care professionals to improve patient care and build healthier workplaces. Marville is married with two young children and two adult step-children.
