Burloak paddlers among Olympic hopefuls at regatta Blue Devils miss chance to clinch Burloak Canoe Club paddler Aidan Messenger (pictured in photo, left) and three Canadian teammates finished fourth in the under-17 men's kayak fours 200-metre event at last weekend's Olympic Hopes regatta in Bydgoszcz, Poland. Burloak's Christian Sprang (pictured, right) also competed in men's kayak at the regatta, which featured participants from more than 20 countries representing four continents. The Olympic Hopes competition is for athletes up to 17 years of age, allowing a future generation of Olympians to gain high-quality international experience. The Canadian team was selected based on results of a national team trial which took place June 19-21 in Montreal. Despite losing just three times in their first 21 regular-season games, the Oakville Blue Devils might have to wait until their season finale to clinch top spot in the League1 Ontario men's soccer standings. Oakville missed an opportunity to lock up first place Sunday, dropping a 2-0 decision to the host Toronto FC Academy in Toronto. Entering last night's (Wednesday's) action, the Blue Devils held a seven-point lead over the second-place Woodbridge Strikers, but Woodbridge has three games remaining while Oakville has just one -- a visit to ProStars FC this Saturday in Brampton. The Blue Devils (16 wins, two draws, three losses) need a victory in their final contest, or a loss by Woodbridge in one of its last three games, to secure the League1 Ontario regular-season title. "It is completely in our hands and we need a constructive week of preparation, together with a strong performance to close out the year," said Blue Devils head coach Duncan Wilde, who gave Toronto FC Academy full credit for outplaying his squad Sunday. 41 | Thursday, October 1, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Home Improvements aldek home improVements interior design Who Does It...
