Lindsay, who has cerebral palsy, was one of 285 physically disabled, mentally challenged and terminally ill children - 20 of them from Oakville - flown to Disney World in Florida with Air Canada's 12th annual Dreams Take Flight last Wednesday They filled two 767 aircraft. Picone, a teacher at St. Thomas Aquinas Secondary School, and founder and caretaker of the Oakville Field Hockey Club (OFHC), was one of five adult volunteers who accompanied 20 local children on the flight. He was also instrumental, along with Vinnie Di Rollo, mother of a seriously ill and physically disabled boy, Christian, in raising $52,000 for Dreams Take Flight from the second annual Dream-a-thon field hock ey tournament and sale of butterflies. "I spent the whole day with Lindsay, lifting her in and out of her wheelchair, and in and out of the rides, as well as lifting in and out of the airplane," said Picone. "And Lindsay would reach out, without warning, and hold my hand. Or, she would put her arm around me," he continued, his voice breaking with emotion. "I was overwhelmed by her wonderful touch, and how her reaching out to me made me feel. "I am, as a teacher, conditioned not to ever touch a child. We've been conditioned by culture and education (not to reach out and touch), yet a lot of these kids haven't been touched, influenced and warped by this. "It reminded me of what it means to be essentially human." For Picone, who had experienced his second Dreams Take R ight trip, it was a learning experience.
