Men's heroic actions saw them rescue their neighbour continued from p.8 Good's knock at the door, Good called the building's security office for assistance. Building Superintendent Bruce Richardson asked building security to call 911 and immediately proceeded to the apartment to investigate. Richardson met Good at the apartment door at which point Richardson used his master key to enter the unit. The apartment was full of smoke, but the men could hear moaning sounds coming from inside. Fire in the kitchen Both men entered the apartment to find a fire in the kitchen and the elderly apartment resident collapsed on the floor. Birtig said the men worked together to drag the resident out to the hallway. Firefighters arrived on the scene a short time later and extinguished the blaze. The Oakville Fire Department determined the fire was caused by a pot on the stove, which had ignited. The elderly man had unsuccessfully attempted to fight the fire himself and had received some minor burns and smoke inhalation in the process. Smoke inhalation Good and Richardson also received some smoke inhalation in the process of getting the man out of the smoke-filled apartment. All three were taken to hospital. Oakville Deputy Fire Chief Brian Durdin said the individuals closed the apartment door on their way out, which contained the fire and much of the smoke to the unit. As a result, it was not necessary for the building to be evacuated. "We're recognizing these men because of their selfless act in rescuing their neighbour," said Birtig. "They had an opportunity to help a neighbour, they had an opportunity to make a difference and they did."
