Oakville teen begins new chapter as page at Queen's Park by Julia Le Oakville Beaver Staff 13 | Friday, October 23, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com An Oakville teen was committing to memory the names, faces and locations of the 107 Ontario MPPs -- all before she started her job as a legislative page at Queen's Park Monday (Oct. 19). Julia Empey is among a number of Grade 7 and 8 students from across Ontario who were selected to serve as messengers on the floor of the Legislative Assembly of Ontario in Toronto. During their three-week stint, they'll have to learn how bills and motions are processed, and where they go in the building, have the opportunity to meet key parliamentary players and learn how government works. Empey, a Grade 8 student at St. Michael Elementary School, said she's looking forward to the "real world experience" she'll gain through the program. Julia Empey "As a page you learn a lot about teamwork and working together to serve a cause," she said, noting she expects to hone her communication skills. The 13-year-old is also interested in politics and law. "I really want to see it firsthand and see if it's what I want to do," she said. Empey describes herself as an opinionated, talkative person. She said she wants to use that outspoken personality to give back and act as voice for the community. The legislative page program is open to Grade 7 and 8 students who have an interest in current affairs and carry an academic average of 80 per cent or higher.
