Halton police host forums on making a home less attractive to thieves The Halton Regional Police Service is inviting residents to learn how to make their homes look less attractive to a potential burglar during this year's provincial Crime Prevention Week. The week (Nov. 1-7) is supported by the Ontario Association of Chiefs of Police, the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services and all police services across Ontario. The theme of this year's Crime Prevention Week is Community Safety and Well-being A Shared Commitment in Ontario. Officers note crime prevention starts at home and following some easy and inexpensive tips can help reduce the risk of becoming a victim of crime. "Crime prevention and Community Policing is what we do," said Deputy Chief Nishan Duraiappah. "We believe that Ontario communities are among the safest in the world. For the fourth year in a row, Maclean's magazine has named Halton Region the Safest Place to live in the Greater Toronto Area and the Safest Regional Municipality in Canada. "This achievement is a result of our partnerships with community leaders, young people, businesses, government and the communities we serve." While police said overall break-and-enters are down throughout the Region, Oakville and the north end have seen an increase over last year's numbers. Break-ins in Burlington are significantly down this year. Residents can learn more about how to protect themselves from break-ins during Crime Prevention Week by visiting with a Halton Regional Police officer at the following locations throughout the week: Thursday, Nov. 5 · Georgetown -- 69 p.m. at Georgetown Marketplace Mall, 280 Guelph St.; · Oakville -- 48 p.m. at Home Depot, 99 Cross Ave. Friday, Nov. 6 · Burlington -- 69 p.m. at Lowes in Alton Village, 2070 Harrison Cres. 17 | Thursday, November 5, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com Cooking for one is a lot of work.
