Lorne Scots ask Town for help erecting monument by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff 27 | Thursday, November 5, 2015 | OAKVILLE BEAVER | www.insideHALTON.com The Town of Oakville has been asked to help erect a monument recognizing the 150 years of service the Lorne Scots Regiment has given Canada. Lorne Scots representative Henry Verschuren made the request during a recent council meeting. The Canadian Forces group is also asking for memorials to be installed in Brampton and Halton Hills. "Most communities in Canada, since the Boer War times, have gifted to their local regiments an erected memorial for their service to the country, particularly with respect to the service of members of that community," said Verschuren. "Currently, there does not exist a regimental memorial to the Lorne Scots in any Canadian community." Oakville is home to A Company, a unit of the Lorne Scots infantry regiment that is headquartered in the Oakville Armoury. The Armoury also serves as a meeting and training area for the 1188 Lorne Scots Royal Canadian Army Cadet Corps. Soldiers from the 20th Halton Battalion and 36th Peel Battalion, which would eventually be re-organized to form the Lorne Scots, served during the Northwest Rebellion in 1885 and the Boer War in 1899. Their work continued into the 20th century with Lorne Scots fighting in the First and Second World Wars. The regiment has also provided troops to peacekeeping missions around the world, including operations in Cyprus, Cambodia, Croatia and Bosnia. Most recently, many Lorne Scots have served with the International Security Force in Kandahar Province, Afghanistan. "The year 2016 marks the 150th anniversary of the Lorne Scots Regiment. In that year, a new battle honour will be added to our regimental colours for Afghanistan. We are also in the final stages of consideration for a battle honour for the War of 1812," said Verschuren. "I point that out, specifically, because the members of the regiment involved in the War of 1812 came mainly from this community." The cost of all three monuments has been listed at $62,000, so the Oakville monument would cost approximately $20,000. The quote includes foundation and installation costs. The Town is being asked to pay for one-third of the Oakville monument's cost. The federal and provincial governments are each being asked to contribute a similar amount. Verschuren said the goal is to have the monument in place, possibly near the Cenotaph in George's Square, by September 2016. If this can be managed, Verschuren noted there is a possibility Prince Edward, the Duke of Kent and Colonel-inChief of the Lorne Scots, will come to Oakville to participate in the monument's unveiling. "Pending anything going wrong, his Royal Highness has already indicated he would be very happy to come to Oakville," said Verschuren. "He has been here before and remembers this community fondly and would be very happy to do the unveiling at that time." The memorial would be six-feet high and feature two columns at its rear signifying `duty' and `honour.' A regimental cap badge will be at its top and bronze plaques will show the various battle honours. A smaller column to the monument's front will feature the wording, "Dedicated to the soldiers of the Lorne Scots Peel, Dufferin and Halton Regiment for their 150 years of service to our community and our country (1866-2016)." Council voted unanimously to refer the matter to its Budget Committee, which will consider whether funds for the memorial can be made available.
