www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Thursday, November 5, 2015 | 32 Tinkering with time creates some body clock upheaval That's L Life ast weekend, we kicked Daylight Savings Time (DST) out to the curb and ushered in my old nemesis Standard Time, DST's ugly, and altogether unwelcome, cousin. I'm no fan of Standard Time. As an insomniac, I'm obviously over the moon at being handed an extra hour of sleep, which I use wisely, worrying for 60 extra minutes about why I'm wide awake and not fast asleep. However, I nd all this autumnal tinkering with time just makes me feel like I've got the daylight beaten out of me. Yes, it's only one hour, but ex- AIRE ONE MADNEss sAlE! Put it this way, any time we offhandedly adjust the clocks, whether it be springing forward or falling back, it's like we are purposely giving ourselves jet lag. Are we gluttons for punishment and pain? Or are we just cuckoo? Seriously, if you consider we've not only given ourselves jet lag, but also depressingly shorter days and less buoying daylight, it's apparent we are both gluttons and cuckoo. You know we don't have to change the clocks. We could rebel. I mean, lots of countries refuse to spring forward: most parts of North America and Europe and some parts of the Middle East observe Daylight Savings Time, but huge parts of Asia and Africa do not. South America's a mixed bag: some countries do, some don't, depending on whether they're in the mood for restorative daylight or depressing darkness. I don't know how they actually Andy Juniper Guest Contributor decide: a coin ip, or rock/paper/ scissors, I imagine. So, couldn't we simply refuse to fall back? Imagine, more daylight, less foggy-head, less confusion. Confusion? My daughter was at a Halloween party last weekend on the night the clocks changed and was confronted by a frantic reveler who was staring at her watch and crying: "Is this the rst one o'clock?" Yes, honey, it's the rst one o'clock. You still have time to beat that nasty curfew. Confusion? Be honest, when the clocks change, don't you spend most of your time trying to gure out `the real time'? Currently, half the clocks in our house have the correct time -- that is, all the easily-reachable/easy-tochange clocks, while the higherups (requiring both effort and the stepladder that's around here somewhere) and the harder-to-change timekeepers remain stuck in the halcyon days of DST. Take the clock in my car (please): You could bring Einstein back from the dead and he'd peruse the manual on how to change that clock and just scratch that famous head of wild hair in puzzlement. These days, I don't know whether I'm late or early, but I'm pretty sure I'm never on time. Next fall, I'm going to go all Song Saa on Standard Time, and I invite you to join me. Song Saa is a private island resort in Cambodia where they've set all clocks forward permanently so guests can catch a beautiful sunrise at a more civilized, rested time. I'm big on civilized and rested. And I'm a huge fan of extended daylight. -- Andy Juniper can be contacted at ajjuniper@gmail.com, found on Facebook www.facebook.com, or followed on Twitter at www.twitter. com/thesportjesters.
