Now that 222 hp was a very big deal back then with Nissan Canada, and it even gave us baseball caps with "222" sewn on so that we wouldn't forget what Nissan engineers felt was a major achievement. Well, fast forward to 2002 and there sits the Maxima with 260 hp and a six-speed close ratio manual gearbox that has moved a very fine, grand touring sedan up to the next rung. Here the word "sports sedan" is loosely used to mean road thumping power and razor-like handling. In short, only those experienced with high-potency road cars need apply. You see, a lot has been happening in the past two years and it can be summed up in one word - horsepower. Where 170-190 hp from a frontdrive V6 was thought fairly potent only 24 months ago, today you've got to have 230 hp or better in the red-hot "near luxury" segment just to get into the game. But there must to be more than simply ponies to catch the interest in what the industry now calls "intenders". Elegant styling with equally envy-inspiring decor is a given, while breeding - some kind of track history - adds to the desirability. While Maxima has always been on just about everybody's shortlist as a chic near luxury sedan, you don't stay on top without continually push ing the envelope. M arketing director Ian Forsythe sums the 2002 Maxima up nicely by saying Nissan transformed this "cut above" sedan into a "bigger cut above worthy of Nissan flagship status." Visually, Nissan didn't tinker much with the styling except for a new grille with Jay Lenostyle jutting chinline, while the High Intensity Discharge (HID) headlights do stand out. There are three trim levels beginning with the GXE that come with 16-inch wheels and represents only 5% o f the total number being built. JIM ROBINSON Road Worthy The more plentiful SE and GLE versions will get 17-inch wheels and twin, chrome tip exhausts. The heart of the car is also the heart of this story and it's the wonderful VQ V6 that has been opened up to 3.5 litres and now produces 260 hp and 246 lb./ft. of torque that flows like honey from a bottle. A four-speed electronic automatic is standard on the GXE and GLE models and optional on the SE. The SE is shipped standard with a six-speed manual transmission, while traction control is an option as long as you buy the SE and GLE fitted with an automatic. The other big news two years ago revolved around the Nissan Multi-Link Beam suspension. Nissan engineers, by making an incremental change to the tie-down points of the link bars, had transformed the handling from a predicable understeering front-driver to a really pointy neutral/oversteerer. The prowess displayed by this car on the fabled Laguna Seca Raceway back then left no one doubting. For that very reason, Nissan returned to Lagu na Seca with the 2002 car and let journalists loose. I am no racer, as regular readers will know, but those who availed themselves of the track had a whale of a good time. Experienced racers don't normally fling a front-driver car into an off-camber bend, but watching others whistle through the daunting corkscrew bend showed the car to be really glued, perhaps not at full racecar speeds, but quicker than most of us will go in a lifetime.
