The school-based competitions are being held at local schools while the Oakville-wide Council competitions will be held at St. Thomas Aquinas high school on two dates. The rst is Friday, Jan. 22, from 6-10 p.m., and is for age-group winners from the following schools: Our Lady of Peace, St. Andrew, St. John, St. Marguerite d'Youville, St. Michael and Holy Family. Also invited that day are Oakville Special Olympics Group A, B and C nalists and all public, private or home-schooled Oakville school children who have not attended a local Catholic school competition. On Saturday, Jan. 23, from 9 a.m.2 p.m., age-group winners from the following schools will compete: Mother Teresa, St. Bernadette, St. Joan of Arc, St. John Paul II, St. Mary, St. Matthew, St. Dominic, St. James, St. Joseph (Oakville), St. Luke and St. Vincent. The championship is held annually, with winners receiving recognition prizes and progressing through local, district and state/ provincial competitions. International champions are announced by the K of C headquarters based on scores from the provincial-level competitions. The district championship for Oakville winners will be held on Saturday, Feb. 6 at Aquinas. But with a 14-man roster that was down to just eight players for Wednesday's nal at the Halton allCatholic Coaches Memorial Tournament, the Titans just couldn't match the Royals' depth. Reding closed the third quarter on a 15-2 run on its way to a 67-49 victory. "They wore us out and it showed," said Holy Trinity's Diego Nunez. "There were a few plays that gave them momentum. We battled hard, though." A strong defensive effort by Nunez helped keep the game close. He pulled down six rebounds in the opening half and was able to clog the lanes to prevent Reding's drives to the hoop. "He works so hard," Trinity coach Andrew Saulez said. "I think he took three charges in the rst quarter. The kid's tough and that's a tangible you've got to have." With Trinity trailing 34-28 midway through the third quarter, its short bench began to take its toll. After holding Reding's Addison Patterson to just two points in the opening half, the Grade 9 phenom led the Royals' third-quarter charge, highlighted by a onehanded jam despite being fouled. On Reding's next possession, he dribbled behind his back to set himself up for an easy layup. Patterson nished with 23 points. "They make you pay for your mistakes," said Saulez of Reding. "Anybody that's going to beat them is going to have to play clean. You can't give them opportunities. And then once they got the lead, it's only natural to start to press." On the bright side, Saulez said it was an opportunity for some players to get more minutes in against a strong league opponent. "It wasn't our most well-rounded game," Nunez said, "but it helps us grow." Though Reding got the better of the Titans for the second time this year, Reding coach Ron Esteban expects a closer game the next time they meet. He coached the Corpus Christi Longhorns team that beat Reding in last year's Halton all-Catholic tournament only to fall to the Royals in the Halton nal. "Having been on the other side, I know what it's like to beat a team twice and then lose in the nal," the Bishop Reding coach said. "We know we're in for a battle down the road when both teams are healthy." They may not have to wait until the Halton nal to meet again.
