www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, January 29, 2016 | 8 Getting fresh food to families in need continued from p.6 not just relying on cheaper canned or boxed food items," says Brenda Hajdu, Food for Life's executive director. "Our goal is to ensure anyone who is struggling has access to fresh food so they don't have to decide between paying for heat or feeding their families." Food for Life is currently providing food for 175,000 meals a month to 80 food banks and hunger relief agencies in the community and is proud to be working with Kerr Street Mission, Halton Multicultural Council, Oak Park Neighbourhood and many more. Last year, Food for Life distributed 2.2 million pounds food to the hungry by providing food to 80 local food banks and hunger relief agencies. Kate Brennan, community engagement officer Food for Life You're as old as you feel: Hazel continued from p.7 "What impression and imprint have you made on the community and the lives of others, etc.... no matter where you are, whether at school, at work or even in a retirement home, it's what you do to make the best of that time." When she opened the floor for questions, many retirement residents and visitors took the opportunity to share how McCallion had touched their lives. One woman, who used to live in Mississauga, but now resides at The Kensington, brought her 50th wedding anniversary plaque signed by McCallion. Yet another resident reminisced about living in Mississauga during the 1979 Mississauga train derailment and recalled she had to stay at her cottage for a week while the area was cleared of contamination. McCallion noted 230,000 residents had to be evacuated as the train was carrying explosives and poisonous chemicals, including a chlorine tank that had been punctured. "We couldn't take any chances," she said, adding it was her first real crisis as mayor. McCallion also revisited her days as a professional hockey player when Jim Gibb presented her with two bottles of Kik Cola -- the company that sponsored McCallion's former hockey team in Montreal. "I have an empty bottle, but I don't have a full one," she chuckled upon recognizing the label, all the while examining the bottle and exclaiming, "Oh my gosh." "This is a treat, second-to-none," she told Gibb, a 57-year Oakville resident who moved to Burlington last year. Gibb had been saving the two bottles of cola for several years to give to McCallion. He said, as a director with Mack Trucks, he had known well McCallion's late husband, Sam McCallion, because he used to get his printing done at Sam's shop. Gibb also had connections to Kik Cola as he too tried out for one of its hockey teams. He said he bought the cola bottles 50 years ago as a reminder of his past, and as years went by he found new purpose for them as he got to know the McCallion family better, he said. "I thought, `I'll save these for a special purpose,' and on your 40th anniversary, I was supposed to give this to you, but you disappeared to some place and I disappeared to some place, and it never got there," said Gibb. He said he'd previously shared the story with his daughter, and when she read in the Oakville Beaver that McCallion would be visiting, she saw an opportunity to complete the story. McCallion said she was very touched by the gesture and kind words Gibb had spoken. "You can't imagine how much that means to me," she said. "It takes me back to 1941." McCallion was also serenaded by Oakville singer Colin Brennan, who in the past has sung for other notable politicians Ontario Premier Kathleen Wynne and former Toronto mayor, now Toronto Councillor Rob Ford.
