O a k v ille J-ihj As pointed out by the official opening's digni taries, Phase II unit (which opened in September) now offers full-care, in-centre hem odialysis, which will reduce travel times for Halton resi dents receiving treatment outside the region. This will also help compensate for Halton's rapid growth plus the projected 15% increase in end stage renal failure patients. The $1 million Women's Diagnostic Centre features more than 4,000 sq. ft. of renovated clin ical space and 1,000 sq. ft. for offices. W hen it was opened in July, it brought together at OTMH mammography, bone densinometry and ultra sound in one convenient location, along with appropriately sized procedure rooms, adequate consultation facilities and pri vate changing areas. "Every aspect of the Centre was designed with the comfort, convenience and privacy of the patient in mind," said HHS Chief of Diagnostic Imaging Dr. Thomas Knapp. "This one-stop approach to these vital diagnostic services has made a signifi cant improvement in the quality of services we can now provide and has increased patient access to this technology." Added Oliver: "The expansion and enhance ment of these services allows us to continue to meet the healthcare needs of our growing commu nities. We're very pleased that these projects are now complete and our patients are benefiting from these enhancements." Some benefits may seem relatively insignifi cant to outsiders, but for patients like Saima Paan - who was undergoing dialysis while the ceremo ny was taking place in the auditorium - the expanded number of stations help a lot. Paan explained that she underwent treatment three days a week a 5:30 p.m. but now she can book a more convenient morning slot. A ccording to Dr. Danny Sapir, Medical Director of OTM H's Renal Dialysis Program, Phase II includes space for the Progressive Renal Insufficiency (PRI) and Early Renal Insufficiency Just how could new services affect you? -See page A4 (ERI) Clinics which have proven successful in delaying the initiation of dialysis in patients who have lost a portion of their renal function. "With the projected growth rate o f End Stage Renal Failure at 15%, the expansion allows us to better serve an aging population in which dia betes, hypertension and cardiovascular disease is dramatically increasing the incidence of kidney disease," said Dr. Sapir. In addition to furthering the health of patients, added Dr. Stem, the modem units will help retain some of OTM H's top medical staff. One steadfast part of this successful equation, agreed several guests, has been the OTMH Auxiliary. From Clement to Oliver, all reiterated the importance o f the volunteers who not only lend comfort to patients on a daily basis but also raise con siderable funds for the hospi tal. HHS Board chair Barbara Burton, for example, explained that the Auxiliary has raised more than $1 million since 1997 toward the Dialysis Unit and will contribute $1.5 million in total when they're done. Then Burton, Clement and Auxiliary president Joan Jeffery unveiled a bronze plaque acknowl edging the volunteers' role in the unit's expansion. "These projects perfecdy exemplify the impor tance of community support in our hospitals," said Oliver. "It is through the generosity of our com munity and the fundraising efforts o f our Charitable Corporation and volunteers that make projects such as the dialysis expansion and the Women's Diagnostic Centre a reality." In keeping with its ongoing renewal and expan sion, HHS has a proposal before the Ministry for a Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) scanner. During Monday's address, Oliver said that he took the opportunity of Clement's presence to make a personal pitch for the equipment. "The improved diagnostic abilities of an on-site MRI would allow many of our patients to avoid painful invasive surgeries and unnecessary diag nostic exams," said Dr. Knapp. J A K -L A N D j " W h e re tra d itio n : a n d v is io n m ee t" | . | iM fr.i L 1 1 M 9 0 5 -8 4 4 -3 2 7 3 www.ook-lond.conn v V1 1 1 MacLachlan College MacLachlan provides a superior, university bound education for boys and girls from J.K. to Grade 12.
