Wednesday, January 12, 2000 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER B11 Canada drops volleyballshowdown All-star year for Vandeijagt While the Buffalo Bills were losing a shocker to the Tennessee Titans on Saturday, there was also some compelling nationally televised sports of interest to Oakville sports fans on CBC, name ly a volleyball showdown between the national teams o f Canada and the U.S. in Winnipeg. Oakville product Dave Kantor is on the Canadian team although he didn't dress during this all important Olympic qualifying tourna ment as Canada opted to use some veteran club pros who had returned from their overseas clubs. Kantor, a Blakelock grad, has returned to Europe to resume his professional volleyball career and is suiting up with the Spanish club Malaga. Kantor, who himself has several years experi ence with professional clubs overseas, has been a member o f the Canadian team since 1997 and played last year for Canada in several high pro file tournam ents, including the World Championships, Pan-Am Games and the World League. Kantor and the Canadian team still have one more shot at the Sydney Olympics. As finalists at the Continental Cup they did earn a berth into one of three four-team `last chance' Olympic qualifying tournaments that will be held in Europe in July. Only the three division winners will advance to Sydney. (Continued from Back Page Sports) 1999-2000 N F L R E G U L A R S E A S O N Undefeated string preserved in December The Oakville Rangers triple A minor peewee hockey team (sponsored by Fleischmann's Yeast) capped a successful December by winning the Oakville International Tournament. The run up to the victory was not without its speed bumps however. They made an early exit from a Silver Stick Tournament in Whitby in late November with a 1-2-0 record. Perhaps a sign of good things to come, their lone win was a 3-1 victory over powerful Detroit Compuware -- one of the highest rated teams in North America. The Rangers lost their opening game 5-3 to the Vaughan Kings. Eric Murray (from Zack Shepley and David Dobrinsky), Dobrinsky (from Michael Galbraith and Ryan Badham), and Galbraith (from Murray) made it close but the Kings scored an empty netter with two seconds left on the clock to seal Oakville's fate. Next, the Rangers were shut out 3-0 by the Whitby Wildcats. Once again, the final goal was an empty net ter. In the Compuware game, Dobrinsky (from Conor Kelly), Murray (from Carson Jenkin and Kelly), and Cory Martin provided the offence. Returning to league play, Oakville defeated Niagara Falls 4-3. Goals were scored by Dobrinsky with a pair (from Martin and from Kelly), Michael Maganja (from Murray), and Martin (from John Davitsky and Galbraith). On Dec. 5th, the Grey-Bruce Highlanders fell 6-2 to the Rangers. Galbraith got four points in his first game as a forward, scoring a hat-trick (with assists from Zack Shepley, Martin, Jenkin, Badham, and Kelly) and assisting (with Martin) on a goal by Shepley. Kelly also scored (from Badham and James Albrecht). The St. Catharines Royals were next on the Ranger's hit list but things didn't quite work out as planned and Oakville could only eke out a 2-2 tie. Shepley (unassisted) and Badham (from Galbraith) found the net for Oakville. The Rangers relative lethargy continued in a road game against the Welland Tigers on Dec. 9th. Oakville managed a 3-2 win after being badly outshot and out played for most of the game. Down 2-0 with five min utes to play, the Rangers pulled it together with Dobrinsky (from Bryan Carey), Davitsky (from Dobrinsky and Stephen Wheeler), and Wheeler (from Davitsky and Shepley) spoiling the Tigers victory party. On Dec. 12th, the Rangers continued their road trip with a 6-4 victory over the Guelph Junior Storm. Scoring were Wheeler with a pair (from Davitsky and Kelly and from Badhanj and Albrecht), Albrecht (from Galbraith and Badham), Davitsky (from Dobrinsky and Jenkin), Maganja (from Davitsky and Galbraith), and Thomas Karthaus (from Galbraith and Jenkin). In their final league game of the Millennium, the Rangers tied the Burlington Eagles 2-2 at Burlington Central Arena on Dec. 22nd, retaining their undefeated status and running their league record to 18-0-5. Wheeler (from Albrecht and Karthaus) and Davitsky from (Dobrinsky and Jenkin) were the goal scorers. Back in January o f 1993, the Bills pulled off what still is the greatest playoff com e back, point wise, when they eliminated a 32-point deficit to defeat the very same fran chise (they were the Houston Oilers then). The veteran Christie, who is the B ills' all-tim e top point-getter, was actually having a tough time from 4049 yards this season, suc cessful on only three o f nine attempts during the regular season (although it must be said in the same sentence that he was actually 3/3 from 50+. A fast-paced first period had the Burlington squad up by one until three seconds left when David Provost netted one from Patrick Chiasson and Scott Tanski. This seemed to deflate the visi tors as evidenced by an Oakville two-goal lead to end the second. Burlington's efforts were turned aside by solid goaltending from David Clement. Adam DiMarco, unassisted, and Chiasson from Tanski, and Aaron Kachkowski, provided the home side with something to cheer about. Steven Guzzo from Patrick Marsh and Mitchell Fillman upped the lead to 4-1. Clement should have been arrested for three scintil lating stops in the third to keep the score at 4-1, but then the home side stopped pressing and allowed the Eagles to net a power play goal with two minutes left. On the next shift, the rejuvenat ed visitors closed the gap to 4-3, but Anthony Scalia iced an emptynetter. That should have ended the contest, but the Eagles, much to their credit, never stopped skating and stormed right back with one of their own. It was an entertaining tilt and has everyone eager for their next meeting.
