A2 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday January 12, 2000 COME 1 0 HE SOURCE P u b lic s u p p o r t s o u g h t (Continued from p a g e 1) to learn to listen when someone gives us the signs. The program focuses on the Em m e's ribbon card cam paign already successfully in place in Edmonton; what the cards mean and how to use them. It also trains peers and professionals on how to give guidance and support to those who need it." The card concept developed soon after Mike Em m e's death when his fam ily began talking about the tragedy o f teen suicide with his friends. W hen they asked what they could do, the family said, "D on't ever commit suicide. Reach out to som e one and ask for help." This gave them an idea and their Light for Life Foundation was born. Within days o f M ike's death, they began printing pocket-sized cards with yellow ribbons attached in mem ory of Mike and his prized Mustang. The cards read: "This Ribbon Card is a lifeline! It carries the message that there are those who care and will help. If you are in need and don't know how to ask for help, take this card to a counselor, teacher, clergy, parent, or friend and say: I need to use my yellow ribbon." The cam paign, along with the opportunity to partake in a Youth Suicide Training Course, encourages com m unity m em bers to actively par ticipate in reducing youth suicide rates. The annual cost o f getting the pro gram off the ground is estimated at $46,234. This includes hiring a team o f part-tim e staff consisting of a com m unity developm ent and project coordinator, a youth suicide trainer, a com m unity program trainer and two m ental health advocates. The H alton CM HA is seeking financial assistance from the public to help launch the program . The com m unity can help by participating in a variety of upcoming events such as the Halton CM HA 3rd annual fashion show planned for M arch 26th, a July 18th golf tournam ent and its B ike, H ike, Spike and Blade fun d raiser set for June 24th. Donations are also welcome. Call the Leslie W aychison at (905) 693-4270 ext. 4269 for more information or for tickets.
