NEW CENTRAL SCHOOL SATURDAY, JANUARY 16TH AT NEW CENTRAL SCHOOL - 10 AM- 2 PM 133 Balsam Drive, Oakville develop. Try to determine what philosophy guides the program and leadership of your camp choice. "What is your ratio of campers to staff?" This ratio varies with the age level of campers, special needs, and the types of activities available but the counsellor caring for a group of children is the basic unit of care and attention. Confirm that it suits your expectations. "What are the ages of your counsellors?' The OCA recommends that a counsellor is a minimum of 17 years of age. Ask about the training of the staff, the rate of staff turnover and the experience of the senior staff. "What percentage of your campers return each year?" While every camp is clearly not suited to every person, a signifi cant number of returning campers usually indicates a high level of camper satisfaction with a camp's program and leadership. "What provisions are made for campers with special needs?" All children have certain specific and special needs. Determine if the camp you are investigating is able to address your child's unique circumstance. "How will my child get to and from the camp?" Are the buses supervised by camp staff? Do the bus drivers receive camp briefings and/or training? What is the process/progress of your camper from your care to camp and back to your care. "Is your camp accredited by the OCA?" If not, why not? OCA - the Sign of a Good Camp Choices are M any and the Final Choice is Yours There are a number of common misconceptions about organized children's camps; They are elitist, expensive, inaccessible. It is pos sible to find some camps which are designed to serve particular populations, in particular price ranges and in particularly remote parts of the province. It is also true that there is a camp program for almost everyone, almost anywhere and in almost every income bracket. It becomes a matter of knowing the range of choices avail able and then choosing wisely. WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW WHEN CHOOSING YOUR CHILD'S SUMMER CAMP Questions for the Camp Director "What is your background in camping?" The OCA recommends that a camp director has a minimum of 8-10 years of camping experience as a staff member and 4-5 years in a senior staff or supervisory capacity. "What is your camp's philosophy?" Whether it's baseball, computers or canoeing, camp activities should be vehicles to the more fundamental purpose of provid ing a caring community in which your child can grow and CAMP FAIR *00 PARTICIPANTS YMCA WANAKITA OLYMPIA SPORTS CAMP CAMP HUR0NTARI0 CAMP MI-A-K0N-DA CAMP KODIAK CAMP TANAMAK00N CAMP TAPAWINGO CAMP TAWING0 CAMP WENONAH CANADIAN ADVENTURE CAMP CENTAURI SUMMER ARTS CAMP GLEN BERNARD CAMP KANDAL0RE CAMPS OAKVILLE FAMILY YMCA DAY CAMP ONONDAGA CAMP THE HOLLOWS CAMP MC MASTER UNIVERSITY MINI UNW/SPORT FITNESS SCHOOL CAMP BON ECHO V SUMMER 9 GREAT W EEK S of summer fun!
