The coaches' creativity was inspiring. Incorporating almost 600 skaters and 700 different costumes was no easy chal lenge. The music was upbeat and the lighting enhanced the on-ice routines which featured many of the club's national and provincial level skaters. The logistics of moving that many skaters in and out o f the arena was mind bog gling, simply co-ordinating dressing rooms was a chal lenge. Because the building could not accom m odate hundreds of skaters at one time, specific tim es were allotted all skating groups during the production and dress rehearsals, plus per formances. Parents had to drop off and pick up throughout the shows, and needless to say, not every rehearsal or perform ance ran on time. Most people took it all in stride. The arena belonged to the skating club as of last Wednesday and they made use o f every minute and every inch. The show itself, with producer Greg Young and associate producer Annemarie D onaldson at the helm, was months in the planning. Parents were brought into the picture in January, and designated court moms or dads doled out patterns and sewing instructions with all costumes completed before the February picture day. Once the performances were underway, parents wearing headphones combed the arena halls and dressing rooms ensuring the proper order of skaters. W hile moms hurriedly dressed their kids, applied m akeup and frantically repaired, there was a steady stream of skaters lining and emptying benches. All were smiling, gig gling, chatting, having a ball, enjoying their time in the spotlight, albeit for two brief minutes. All knew they were part o f something very special and indeed it was an event that some may only experience the once. The waiting was offset by the excitement o f watch ing other participants go by, making new friends and the congenial mix o f older skaters paired as soloists with the younger ones. It was also thrilling for members to catch a glimpse of Canadian champion and special guest, Josee Chouinard, w arm ing up. She always had a grin, a few words o f encouragem ent and time to sign a skate or a sports bag, or pose for a quick snapshot. It was a trem endous experience not only for the skaters but for the parents, some with up to three chil dren in the show. Spending hours at arenas for several weeks never seemed to be a chore. Dinners and bedtimes were customized to fit show schedules. W hen it was all over though, the frenetic pace of the past several weeks had taken its toll and there were audible sighs of relief and talk o f glasses of wine to soothe frayed nerves. Kudos to Young and Donaldson, prop manager Kim Warren, the coaches and volunteers, who ensured not only the safety of the children, but a memory that they will cherish forever. The show 's success is measured not by the mone tary results, but in terms of the smiles on the faces of the children, said Young. That's what it's all about, he concluded.
