Thompson Three cheers for Hatton champions... ... Brookdale P.S. The Brookdale Broncos lived up to their name as a force to be reckoned with. Comprised of 19 students from grades 7 and 8 (18 female and one male), the red hot Broncos swept through the Halton Cheerleading Championships and the Ontario Cheerleading Federation regionals in Waterloo, catapulting them into the provincials at Brock University in May. Under the coaching of Marg Merivale, the former Ontario champs continued to impress judges with their dynamic three minute routine of sheer athletic prowess and timing. The rewards have not come without intense work and practice, rehearsing positions, timing and counts over and over again. `T hey work really hard," comment ed Merivale. "It's a real sport. There are cheers, dance, stunting, tumbling and they are judged as one entity. They have to flow as one." Because of its high risk, not many schools are anxious to offer cheerlead ing as a sport option, but "it's really big in the U.S." and is being considered as a demonstration sport at the 2000 Olympics, she added. "It's fantastic for self-esteem and physical endurance. It's a sport that brings out the whole athlete; it's a whole package. I encourage kids to come out and see it. It's unbelievable." The Broncos practice twice a week during the school year with a series of cardio-vascular, strengthening and con ditioning exercises and they're encour aged to maintain their physical fitness over the summer. Alongside Merivale, are three student coaches from the T.A. Blakelock Tigers cheerleading squad -- Stephanie Moed, Ashley Crawford and Kirsten Morrison. Once the provincials are over, the Broncos will participate in the "largest cheerleading competition in Canada" at Canada's Wonderland in mid-May fol lowed by a series of clinics and then try outs for next season. As one of two feeder schools for Blakelock, the Broncos give their varsi ty counterparts, the Tigers, also big win ners this year, something to work with, said Merivale. "It's a good opportunity for the young ones to get that knowledge base at the junior level." ... Blakelock H.S. They're on their way. The T.A. Blakelock Tigers' cheer leaders are going to the provincials. Having finished second at the recent Ontario Cheerleading Federation regionals at the University of Waterloo, the team qualified for provincials which will be held at T.A. And they did it with the same rou tine that won them the Halton Sweetheart Championship. In fact, it was a dual Halton championship for the Tigers and the Brookdale Broncos, one of two junior teams which feeds into Blakelock, the other being Pilgrim Wood. "W e're very, very pleased," com mented Kathy DeMan, former coach and current advisor for TAB's varsity cheerleading team. "The girls are ecstatic."
