Bronze medal at the provincials The Oakville Rangers novice triple-A rep team picked up a bronze medal at the Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) champi onship finals- held in Markham last weekend. The Rangers had secured their prized berth two weeks ago, coming from behind to record a 4-3 win in their best-of-seven league championship series with the Halton Hills Hurricanes. The host Markham team deserves a great deal of praise for a great OMHA championship weekend. The Oakville team also tips its hat to its own team officials -- head coach Bill Metcalfe and staff Dan Stothers, John Guzzo and Mike Borcsok for preparing and managing the boys to a hard fought bronze medal. The five-team playdown was set up in a roundrobin format with the top two teams playing for gold/silver and the next two teams playing for bronze. Here's the rundown ... Oakville had a torrid start to the weekend open ing up a 4-0 lead and then holding on for a 4-3 win over Clarington. The Clarington team, not knowing what `quit' means, tallied three in the third period before Oakville goalie David Clement shut the door with another sliding save three minutes from game end. Rangers goals went to Scott Tanski, Tyler Stothers, Adam DiMarco and Patrick Marsh. Assists went to Steven Guzzo (3), Ian Paradis, Mitchell Fillman, Anthony Scalia, Tanski and Marsh. Game two was a different story as it was the Markham Waxers who built a 3-0 first period lead before the Rangers could get untracked. They fought back gamely and closed the margin to 5-4 before empty netters finalized the tilt at 7-4. Goals went to Scott Tanski (2), Anthony Scalia and Patrick Chiasson. Assists went to Brian Urquhart, David Provost, Tyler Stothers and Patrick Marsh. Game three was a near repeat as the Rangers fell behind 4-0 to the powerful Richmond Hill Stars before skating with them the rest of the way en route to a 6-1 loss. Brian Urquhart scored the lone Oakville goal, assisted by Tyler Stothers. In game four, the Stoney Creek Icebreakers were fighting for their lives to make it into the play off round, but their 4-3 win over Oakville was not quite enough. Oakville were down 4-1 before mak ing it real close on a pair of third period goals. Goals were scored by Scott Tanski, Cameron Watts and Spencer Metcalfe. Assists went to Steven Guzzo (2), Adam DiMarco and Anthony Scalia. In the bronze medal match, Oakville found themselves in a rematch with Clarington and the result was the same -- an Oakville win, this one 54. Oakville watched leads of 2-0 and 3-1 dissipate into a 4-4 tie before Spencer Metcalfe scored the bronze medal winning goal on a power play. Metcalfe ended up with a pair as did Tyler Stothers and a single to Brian Urquhart. Assists went to Patrick Marsh (2), Scott Tanski (2), Ian Paradis, Cameron Watts, Patrick Chiasson, David Provost and Mitchell Fillman. Peter DiSalvo was solid in net. Coach Metcalfe was especially pleased with the bronze medal given that Oakville was the only team without imports. PEEWEE AAA Oakville's Ontario Minor Hockey Association (OMHA) triple-A peewee champs opened up their all-Ontario tournament on Monday with a close 21 win over Thunder Bay.
