www.insideHALTON.com | OAKVILLE BEAVER | Friday, September 16, 2016 | 8 Budget hikes on Trafalgar Park/Oakville Arena refurbishment by David Lea Oakville Beaver Staff The Trafalgar Park Revitalization Project, which will see the rehabilitation of the Oakville Arena in Kerr Village, took another step towards becoming a reality, Monday (Sept. 12). The Town's Administrative Services Committee voted to approve construction plans and costs. The meeting saw the committee approve the addition of approximately $1 million to the project's budget bringing it to approximately $39.4 million. The request for a budget increase came after site investigations at the site at 133 Rebecca St., revealed issues such as poor soil bearing capacity, high groundwater levels that will require dewatering during construction, metal and salt contaminants that require remediation and extensive infrastructure requirements to accommodate re truck access from Rebecca and Kerr streets. The $39.4 million budget covers the arena's rehabilitation, and also the construction of a new seniors' centre and re station at the site. Another $780,000 has been budgeted for an outdoor rink on the property and $250,000 for an accessible playground. During Monday's meeting Town staff asked for another $100,000 to add a shade structure to the playground. They also want an additional $450,000 to The newly refurbished Oakville Arena is expected to open to the public in September 2018, if all goes according to plans now making their way through the approvals process at Town Hall. | Metroland le photo create a tness centre at the site, and $275,000 for a Fire Education and Heritage Room in the new re hall. All these plans will come before council for nal approval next week on Monday, Sept. 19. Following public consultation in 2014, Town council approved a resident-supported plan to revitalize and expand the Oakville Arena while maintaining its historical features. Some of the other features of the project include: · Retaining the arena's wooden trusses · An NHL-size ice surface · Seating for approximately 245 people on the interior of the arena · A walking track · Administrative offices · A full-size gymnasium · A new Kinsmen Pine Room for public meetings and events The new re hall, which will replace the Downtown Oakville re hall, will be located at the corner of Kerr and Rebecca streets. Last October, council requested staff to look into the inclusion of a tness centre at the site. Michael Brennan, senior manager of recreational services with the Town's Recreation and Culture Department, said the proposed tness centre would be located on the facility's second oor next to the running track. It would be approximately 1,500 sq. ft. in size and feature weight resistance and cardio areas, but no dedicated aerobics room. "Certainly the addition of the centre would support active living and the health and wellness of the community," said Brennan. The proposed tness centre is not as large as some of the Town's other tness centres, which tend to be in the 3,000-3,500-sq. ft. range. Brennan said the tness centre's membership could also be accommodated in the facility's gymnasium and two community rooms. Brennan also expanded on the Fire Education and Heritage Room. He noted this feature was not part of the original project, but pointed out part of the Oakville Fire Department's mandate is to provide public education relative to re safety and emergency preparedness. "This new venue would utilize interactive displays and public information materials to enhance public safety for residents of all ages," said Brennan. "The central location is ideal for school children and would enhance the re station's ability to meet the re education needs for children across the community. The room would also highlight the history of the Oakville Fire Department and house our 1948 Heritage Pumper."
