For the last 26 years Health Partners International Canada (HPIC) has worked to increase access to medicine for the most vulnerable communities in the world. The group accomplishes this goal by soliciting donations from the Canadian pharmaceutical and healthcare industry and partnering with medical teams, volunteers and humanitarian organizations for short-term medical missions. Early this month, HPIC directed media to its Portland Drive warehouse, where 16 pallets of medication, weighing on average 580 pounds each, were ready to be airlifted to Haiti. "This is a work of mercy. Bringing medicine to people who really need it. There are children dying of totally preventable diseases. It's horrible," said Christina Parsons, HPIC communications director. "What we have here is a variety of medicines supplied by 19 different companies. It's about $1.3 million worth of medicine. That's enough to treat 50,000 people." The medicine was taken from Oakville to a Montreal airport Nov. 8 and from there it was flown to Port-au-Prince, Haiti where the Canadian charity Food For The Poor will see that it gets to the clinics and doctors who need it.
