For homemakers, household chemicals can be devastating to hands: Detergents, soaps, cleaning agents, ammonia and bleaches. Sportswomen, too, have special skin and nail problems. They often show signs of aging more rapidly because of constant exposure to the ele ments: sun, water, snow, ice-even dry air. About Your Skin Although you may be born with baby-perfect, almost poreless, flawless skin, as you mature, your skin changes. You undergo hormonal changes which affect your skin. You're subject ed to pollution and the elements. You can get into bad habits which contribute to damaging your skin: indulging in junk foods, smoking and excess drinking. Perhaps the most important health care regi men you should develop is caring for your skin. It's never too late to start, but the younger you start, the better-and your reward is healthy, younger-looking, beautiful skin. Before you start a skin care program, get to know your skin type and its sensitivities. Dry Skin: Has very fine pores, but tends to flake and be sensitive. Rarely does dry skin develop imperfections. Oily Skin: Has lightly visible pores. Oily skin often begins to shine shortly after makeup is applied. Normal Skin: The nose and forehead tend to be oily (known as the T-Zone), while the remain der of the face is just right-neither dry nor oily. Skin Structure Skin- is made up of different layers. The out ermost layer of the epidermis forms a barrier which helps keep body fluids from getting out and helps prevent foreign substances and bacte ria from getting into your body. Most of the skin's colouration is also contained in the epi dermis. Beneath the epidermis is the dermis which provides most of the skin's strength and support As you grow older, the dermis loses some of its elasticity. The skin's thickness and susceptibility to dry ness vary from person to person, as well as from body part to body part. For example-the skin on the face is thinner than the skin on some other parts of the body. Since your face is constantly exposed to the elements, special care must be taken to protect it. General Skin Care Tips Your skin is a mirrored reflection of your thoughts, feelings and lifestyle. Here are a few tips which should always be part of your skin care regimen. · Maintain a well-balanced diet Especially important are foods which are rich in vitamins A, C and E. High-protein foods, veg etables and fruits are excellent sources of these vitamins. Stay away from deep-fried foods, sugar and white starchy foods. · Drink six to eight glasses of water daily. Water will help prevent your skin from drying out and will rid your skin of impurities. · Get enough sleep. Burning the candle at both ends will contribute to making you look older before your time. If you don't get enough sleep, your skin will puff, sag, look lifeless and become discoloured. · Avoid excessive exposure to sun Exposure to ultraviolet light will help age your skin. If you plan to spend time in the sun, use a good sun block. · Get plenty of exercise. Any type of exercise that keeps your body moving helps improve your circulation. Result: your skin has a healthy glow. Exercise is also an important key to a good complexion. Toning exercises should accompany weight-loss programs because they help firm up skin. · Avoid excesses of alcoholic beverages Too much beer, wine or liquor can cause your skin to puff, discolour or become dehydrated. · Stop smoking.
