B6 THE OAKVILLE BEAVER Wednesday June 7, 2000 Canoeist on thirdleg ofcross-Canada trek On Saturday, June 3rd, two women set out be canoe from Reindeer Lake, Saskatchewan, to paddle the third and final leg of Canada by Canoe, a 9,000-kilometre paddle, over three consecu tive summ ers, from the St. Lawrence R iver to the Arctic Ocean. The journey was conceived by Erin M cK night, a 24-year-old local resident, in the winter of 1997. M cK night and M arie Roberts, began the first leg of the expedition in April 1998 on the St. Lawrence River. W hen the tw o reached the town of Marathon, on the north shore of Lake Superior, Marie was forced to abandon the expedition due to family emergency. Despite an injured foot, McKnight contin ued on alone, paddling the remaining 500 kilometres on Lake Superior to Thunder Bay. McKnight returned to Thunder Bay the following May with a new paddling partner, Alison Pick, to resume her paddle to the Arctic Ocean. By August, 1999, the paddlers reached Reindeer Lake in northern Saskatchewan; covering a total distance of 6,000 kilometres over two summers. McKnight has set out in the 17.5 foot, 56 pound Kevlar canoe from Reindeer Lake with friends M aura Sullivan, and Pamela Lewis who will take over for the Mackenzie River portion, in an attem pt to reach Tuktoyaktuk, NWT, by October 2000. The paddlers have been dehy drating their own food and repair ing equipm ent throughout the winter in preparation for this sum mer, presenting slide shows of their voyage and lining up spon sors. The major objective of this cross Canada odyssey is to raise awareness about mental health issues. M cKnight chose this cause because her mother was diag nosed as `manic depressive' and took her own life when she was eight years old. "Unfortunately, there is a great stigma surrounding mental illness. Fear and ignorance have created the false belief that a person with mental illness has a weak charac ter and is potentially dangerous.
