As members of the Muslim community attended midday prayer services, participants created an honour guard at both doors as people entered the place of worship. Peace Circle participants then formed a circle while prayers were going on. "We are together in faith," said Rabbi Steven Wise, chair of the Interfaith Council of Halton, who helped organize the Peace Circle. "We are together in love." Participants, of all ages, were members of Oakville's faith communities. "We wish we didn't have to come out under these circumstances," said Wise. "We came together in this time of need." Six men were killed following an attack on the Centre Culturelle Islamique in Quebec City Jan. 29, in which a gunman opened fire during evening prayers at the mosque. The shooting triggered heightened anxiety at religious institutions across the country. Peace Circles, or Rings of Peace, like the one in Oakville, were held across the Greater Toronto Area Friday. Wise said Friday is the day Muslims gather together to pray in congregation. A funeral for three of the six men who were killed was held the same day in Quebec City. It was apparent members of the Al Falah Islamic Centre appreciated the show of support from the community, as they shook the hands of people who came out for the Peace Circle. Oakville MP John Oliver, Halton MPP Indira Naidoo-Harris, Oakville MPP and Ontario Labour Minister Kevin Flynn, and Oakville Town Councillors Tom Adams and Dave Gittings were among the many people who attended. "Sometimes you are called on to stand up for Canada," said Flynn. For photos of the event, see p.18 Winterbooking QSI HOMEComforT!
