Today, the likes of Demi Moore and Arnold Schwarzenegger have joined the bandwagon, not to mention Bill Clinton. We're talking about cigars here, from the most delicate, lady-like cigar illos to the big, in-your-face stogies. No matter your preference or your price range, cigars in general are enjoy ing a resurgence throughout North America and that includes Oakville. Fidel himself would be pleased to know that he could take a stroll down Lakeshore Road and purchase Havana's finest-- a Cohiba Splendido-- at the grand price of $58.99 (Canadian). Thanks to the recent opening of Havana Castle Cigar Store on the Lakeshore just east of Kerr, cigar devo tees can choose from over 200 different types, including the most popular Cuban brands. Ed Assi, co-owner of the store along with his brother-in-law Alex Razek, says he carries one of the largest sup plies of Cuban cigars west of Toronto, from the modest quintero at $2 each to the so-called "emperor of cigars", the Cohiba Splendido at $58.99. In between there are cigars of good to best quality, including brands made famous by Churchill (Romeo and Julietas) and Che Guevara (Montecristos). To ensure consistent, top quality, Havana Castle has designed its store with a large, climate-controlled humi dor which is walk-in size and com pletely lined with Spanish cedar. All cuban cigars are stored in the humidor which is kept at a constant, seventy per cent humidity. In the near future, Assi says he plans to install individual lockers in the humidor where steady customers can store their special Cubans. Assi, who is himself a cigar-lover, says it can take fourteen years of expe rience to train a top cigar maker. While the Cuban brands are the most popular and famous, he also carries labels from the Dominican Republic and Brazil, including hand-rolled and machine made. For the growing number of female cigar patrons, Havana Castle carries the diminutive Zino, Davidoff and El Guajiro cigarillos which although more like cigarettes in size, are not usually inhaled. Assi says he's aware that not every one appreciates the aroma of a good cigar, and with that in mind, he has cre ated a comfortable lounge at the back of the store where devotees can sit back, light up and enjoy their favourite complete range of tobacco products and brand, guilt-free. accessories including cigarettes, pipe Although cigars are the centrepiece tobacco, quality pipes, lighters, and of the shop, Havana Castle offers a giftware.
