Bell met Schrenk in Oakville during the Victoria Day weekend along with her husband of 14 years, Kevin, 34, and their eldest daughter Jenna, 13, who saved up her baby-sitting money to accompany her parents. When Bell was greeted at the airport by Schrenk, she shed a few tears as he handed her a bouquet of flowers. Tears aside, Bell said it was a very happy moment for both of them. Bell laughingly recalled one of her first reactions upon seeing Schrenk was to blurt out, "I thought you were much taller." Bell said Schrenk is very modest about what he has done for her and her family. The first time she telephoned Michael to thank him he said "It's no big deal." The two had to wait a year before they could meet because ihe Red Cross has a 12-month waiting period for the release any personal information. Even then, both parties must agree to it. "I have friends whose donors do not want to meet them, and they are quite envious of me being able to meet Michael," said Bell. Schrenk said donating bone marrow was not painful. The first step involved giving a blood sample. If at some point the blood shows potential for a match then another sample is taken. "It is a long lead up to the process where they actually harvest bone mar­ row," said Schrenk. Once Schrenk was found to be a perfect match, he was required to stay overnight in the hospital and undergo a general anesthetic while a litre-and- a- half of bone marrow was removed from the back of his pelvis. 'The actual donation was routine. I carried on with my life - it didn't effect my life like it did Wendy's," said Schrenk. "I went in and came out the same." His father, Don Schrenk, had some initial reservations, but was reassured after talking with the doctors. "We were pleased with his decision, but concerned because we wanted to know all the ramifications and the long and short term impacts," said Don Schrenk. "I remember looking at that bag when they brought it in and said, 'Nope, that's not enough'," he said. Luckily, he was wrong. Four months after receiving the transfusion, Bell's body accepted the marrow and the long slow healing process began. Kevin Bell says he cannot even bear to remember what the family has been through in the past few years. "It was a pretty bad time around our house then," he said. Their life fell apart four years ago when the couple's son Jayson, now 8, contracted Leukemia. Bell, who worked as a Health Care Aide, became ill a year and a half after Jayson. In one of life's ironies Bell and her husband had registered as bone marrow donors to help another family whose daughter needed a transplant. Two weeks after registering, Bell was diag­ nosed with cancer. Suddenly she was terribly ill, had a four-year-old son who was also fight­ ing to live, plus two young children who needed her at home. The eight-hour round trip to the hospital in Winnipeg forced Kevin Bell to find accommodation near the hospi­ tal. Their three children, Jayson, then 4, Stacey, 7, and Jenna, 9, moved in with his parents. He also had to take a five-month leave of absence from his work with Manitoba's Department of Highways to offer support to his son and wife while they were being treated. All that is in the past now. Jayson is better and Bell's family is back togeth­ er again thanks to Schrenk. "Schrenk is like a brother, he is part of me," said Bell. Her blood type even changed from O negative to A positive -- the same type as Schrenk. Bell feels fine now, but she is always at risk of getting an infection or having a relapse and the chemicals and medications have taken a toll on her body. But that did not stopped her from enjoying every minute of her four days in Oakville. Plans are underway for Schrenk and his girlfriend to visit the Bells in Hamiota.
