Runner-up for team o f the year The Oakville sailing trio of Dirk Knuelman, Paul Sustronk and Alan Harvey had to settle for the honour of being nominated for the team of the year at the Canadian Sport Awards ceremony in Toronto earlier this month. The Oakville sailing team, who pulled off a stunning victory in last September's Etchells class world sailing championships in Marblehead, Mass., lost out to Canada's short track relay speed skating team who struck gold at the Olympic Games, the world team championships and the world championships. The other nominee was Mike Harris' silver medal winning Olympic curling team. Oakville is certainly no stranger to this award with Donovan Bailey winning the team (as well as individual) award in both 1995 and 1996 for achieving world and Olympic championships in the 100 metres and as part of the Canadian relay team. Dirk Kneulman, Paul Sustronk and Alan Harvey outraced a field of more than 100 boats. Among them were some of the best and most accomplished sailors in the world, including Olympic medalists and America Cup winners Dennis Connor of the United States and Russell Coutts o f New Zealand. Oakville runners in Ham ilton race A sizeable contingent o f Oakville runners completed the Around the Bay road race last Sunday in Hamilton. The 5K race boasted 541 competi­ tors, 16 of them from Oakville. Top Oakville male finishers in this race were Paul Osland, Brian Nicholson and Hans Stockermans.
